off topic- Calling all kitty experts ... again

I posted a week or so ago about a new kitten I adopted and was having a d i c k e n s of a time getting her to use her litter box. I'm happy to say she is using it 100% of the time now. Thanks for all your advice. But now I have a different issue. I have another cat gracie who is two years old. She's always been healthy and breakfast is her favorite meal of the day. She never misses a breakfast. This morning she was a no show. She just wants to stay in bed. No diarrhea, no vomiting, eyes clear and bright, using the litter box fine. Should I be concerned?? I realize I can't expect my cats to go thru their entire lives without ever having a sick day. Thoughts??

I would keep an eye on her for the rest of the day, so long as she eats at some stage and is fine in herself I wouldn't worry. My cat occasionally misses a meal and just wants to sleep! But if she appears in any way unwell or still doesn't want to eat I would be concerned. Hope she's ok!

Any chance she got into something overnight? My fatties love their breakfast but will miss it when they have stolen food overnight.
  • I doubt she got into any food during the night. I have a fattie too... Hermie....he weighs 26 lbs. The only food out for them at night is their dry food and then they get a dish of wet food for breakfast. She's in bed with my husband right now. She's just very quiet. She's not running a fever. I take a lot of meds and worry that maybe I dropped something at sometime and she found it. However, if that were the case then she would have thrown it up or if it was going to kill her it would have by now. She's not in any obvious pain or distress.

Maybe she is just a little stressed from the new kitten and looking for one on one attention (hence in bed with your hubby).
Or, if the kitten is running over for food then she may just be avoiding it until the coast is clear.

When I got my eldest kitty (Ziggy) I already had a 6 month old cat (Jessie) and within a week it went from Jessie ruling the roost (and the food area) and kitten Ziggy fearing for her life, to Ziggy ruling the roost (and the food area) and Jessie getting used to the new status quo. Eventually Jessie just sat in the background until Ziggy had finished and left before going to her food tray.

In the end it took a few weeks for them to completely settle and a few months for them to become firm friends.

If it is stress, it will pass, but a sign would be that she might have a "few accidents" around the house as stressed cats often have toilet issues.
  • Thanks everyone for all your advice! I really appreciate it. Today Gracie is back to her old self. For whatever reason she just had a down day yesterday. We all do once in awhile and after all..... cats are people too!

Is she hiding? Standing behind furniture or curtains? My cat does this when she's in pain (she has sciatica). When she's actually sick she just won't eat and will stay in bed, sometimes it passes in 24 hr but I'd recommend weighing her now and again in a few hours and if her weight has gone down get her to a vet
