insanity or not

Hi I just wondered if anyone could advise before I buy the insanity dvd

I tore a ligament in my knee a few years ago which healed but every now and then when I try to push my exercise it swells up its not painful just becomes very tight.

I have a lot of different exercise dvd's e.g, Davina, 30 day shred, Nell Mc'andrews but I am looking for something different as everyone I get involves swats which triggers of the swelling.

If anyone has any ideas on what exercise program I could follow I would be grateful

Do you have Davian's power of 3 DVD? How are your knees with all the squatting in the legs and bums part?
  • I wouldn't. Insanity is hard on the knees. I can only do it about 2x a week w/o it hurting my knees. Running is easier on my knees than Insanity. Try FocusT25 for an intense, but definitely easier on the knees kind of program.

I agree about Insanity, but imo T25 is also hard on the knees. It's shorter, but also intense and there are many squats and lunges involved.

OP, maybe you should go for a less lower focus programme like Trubofire/Turbojam or Les Mills Combat which are more kickbox oriented.

I have Davina's high energy 5 and my knee is fine all the way through its about 20 minutes after I have done squats or lunges it swells

Insanity has a lot of impact movements and lateral moves. I wouldn't suggest it for someone with knee problems.

While I agree that Insanity is hard on the knees I also have had a torn ACL and meniscus in one knee and a complex tear of the meniscus in the other. This was all before I attempted Insanity. I started out very slow and used a brace on the knee that was worse. As I developed strength in my legs I eventually was able to do it without the brace. Long story short, I was having difficulty with stairs before Insanity and now I regularly can do any Insanity workout and have even run up to 1/2 marathon with no knee problems.
It's all in how you approach it. You can't fix an area of problem without rehab and focus.

My knees are not great but I have never had a problem with Insanity. Initial soreness is a problem but just go at your own pace and I think you would be fine. Take it slow and don't be afraid to hit pause if you have to.

I do insanity on 3/4" thick black interlocking gym mats (from ****'s sporting goods), with a no slip rug pad underneath. It really helps to have that cushioning. I'm 39 and broken bones and torn tendons and ligaments in both feet/ankles previously. I have no pain at all doing insanity. Give it a try.
