Stacy Kaiser, the resident therapist for the celebrities on VH1’s Celebrity Fit Club, witnesses a lot of struggles with weight loss. Getting motivated for the ongoing effort is key. One tool she offers anyone trying to lose weight is to remember: motivation is within your GRASP!!

Goal-setting :flowerforyou:
Where do you want to be in the short term and the long term? Set reasonable goals and be clear and specific. For example:

“I want to exercise 3 times a week.”
“I want to eat right.”
“I want to be healthy and exercise with my kids.”
“I want to look great in a dress for my reunion.”
“I want to be able to sit comfortably in an airline seat.”

Whatever your goal is, sit down with a journal and write it out. Next, write down the steps it’s going to take to get there.

Reasonable expectations
You are not everyone else. Because a certain celebrity lost 6 pounds every week on the show doesn’t mean that you will or should. Your body is different. Your lifestyle is different. One of the key diet killers is unrealistic expectations—it’s the fastest way to let yourself down and then want to quit.

Avoid old bad habits :drinker:
Make a list of what you know your bad habits are. Is it nighttime eating? Overeating? Stress eating? Too much bread? Come up with list of new good habits such as:

“I will not clean my plate; I’ll always leave some food on it.”
“I’ll have healthy snacks on hand if nighttime eating tempts me.”
“I’ll send the bread basket back in a restaurant.”
“When I’m stressed, I’ll call a friend instead of eating over it.”
“If I’m craving french fries, I’ll eat 3 and throw the rest away.”

Support is mandatory
The opposite of support is sabotage. So surround yourself with people who will help you and lift you up and make you feel good. Keep up lots of contact with those people, and less with those who aren’t supportive. It doesn’t necessarily have to be someone you’re close to—you can find support online, like here!

If your partner, for example, turns out not to offer such great support, turn to “I” statements:

“I am choosing to be healthier. I am going to find support elsewhere if it doesn’t come from you. I am going to take over half the refrigerator and keep my food there.”

It’s all about empowering yourself and setting a course despite what your partner is saying. Sometimes sabotage from a partner is about their fear of being left behind. Get to the bottom of those issues.

Persistance when you feel like giving up :explode:
There’s no such thing as a quick fix or quick result. There are times with celebs on the show when they’re losing--and then nothing. Long term commitment is the big picture. If you slip or feel like giving up, go back to the beginning and review your goals, your plans—stop the avalanche. Take a deep breath and get back in your body. Think along the lines of, “What’s going on with me? Why am I doing this? Who can I call?”

Good luck with your weight loss journey. You're going to do great!!
