What's a weight fluctuate look like? Like this

Ahhhh man. The scale, as I've said before, is a dirty freaking liar. I've been sticking to counting my calories and exercise for more than a month straight without screwing up once (go me!) and these nutty fluctuates are just a part of life I've learned to just live with and work around. I was 231 last Wednesday and judging by my rough calculations of deficit and calorie burnt and whatnot, I should be 230 today. Or yesterday. Who knows. Sometime around there. But I had 230 in my head when jumping on the scale so that's what I was shooting for. And I know it. I know in my heart that that's what I am despite what this damn scale says. I'm 230 dammit!

So after getting on the scale the first time it's confirmed that I'm now playing the "get on and off and on and off" game when I see an insanely unrealistic number. The first number was 237, but I was mad and deleted it. That was around 9am. Got back on around noon and now I'm 235 and then alllll over the place. Then...I see it. That glorious 2-3-0 I've been working days to see.

So really, I just wanted to tell my fitness pal family: don't sweat it if you see a crappy number despite doing all the right things. The scale won't always do what you want but if you know deep down you lost weight, that's enough. Also, take measurements! I see I supposedly gained 5 lbs but my pants are looser? Yeah. Screw the scale. I know when I'm losing weight and the scale won't have power over me!

That is a good example and reminder of why some people only weigh themselves every week instead of everyday. The fluctuations drive me crazy and I feel let down because of it.
    But yes, stupid scale!

    Great post!

We often fall back on the scale as the easiest of measurements, but taking the time to take progress pics and getting out the tape measure are much greater indicators.

And that's what I do! Weighing myself everyday only served to drive me crazy on a daily basis and never gave me any accurate information. And even at a 1000 calorie deficit, what kind of progress do you expect to see on a daily basis? .1lbs? Since weight loss isn't linear, it's really unlikely that you'll see that. So I wait until I can expect a significant amount of weight to come off. If I think a pound should be off me, I'll give it a go. Sometimes I'll wait til I expect I lost 2 lbs. but everyday? Oh no. Never again!

LOL! Oh, my scale likes to trick me, too, just to mess with me, I think. I'm down again now, but I had what looked like weight gain for sure (although not really for longer than a week). I don't know what that was, but I know my numbers/measuring are good, so I was all like 'Yeah, right!'. Who knows?

My tape measure even agreed. They are in cahoots! Nah, I just think I was bloated, probably, for whatever reason. It happens ;)
  • Well, I'm new to the forum so I'm hoping someone can give some insight. I'm 5 3 is and started at 180lbs. on Jan 2nd. I've stayed under 1200 calories and I'm doing crossfit 5 days a week. When I weighed myself today, the scale said 195! So, what am I doing wrong! Me and that scale are not the best of friends right now! Any advice is greatly appreciated

Thats why I combined my Fitbit account with Trendweight, it takes out those fluctuations, and gives you a better idea of where you are going.

stupid fluctuation. I had one of my own this morning. 222.8 yesterday. 225.4 today. I know it's because I ate late, but jeeeeeeze. That's a huge difference. It better be back to normal tomorrow or I'm chucking my scale out the window.

Yeah natural weight fluctuation is pretty interesting (aka frustrating lol). For about 3 months I weighed everyday. I did this to train myself to get use to these fluctuations and because I like pretty charts.

Below is a snapshot of my daily weight change chart...

    2a00nsn.jpg

I dunno if it is big enough to notice, but it includes 12-14lb swings in 72 hours. Now some of that is attributed to having a bad day here and there, but those kind of swings would also happen when I was "being good". I was (am) also really large so the size of fluctuations will be bigger than most...but still an interesting look at how much bodyweight can fluctuate.
  • Ha these blumming scales... Last week they told me I was 174 lb ( I'd not weighed myself for a week as TOM) I felt that little flutter of excitement and then reality set in and I got off and back on as I really didn't see how I could have dropped 5 lb in 8 days, reality then set in at 177 I was devastated, if that wasn't my lowest recorded weight in about 5 years I'm sure it would have led to me stuffing my face with crap! Oh well onwards and upwards.
