Is there a wrong way to run?

Hi all,

I've done some running in the past, so I'm not a newbie, but I'm also not a real "runner" yet. I feel like I'm always doing it wrong, I'm never really comfortable and my hip always feels out of place afterwards.

I know its hard to tell if you don't see me running, but do you have any general tips for good running form, or do you think this will fade with experience?

Thanks :)

Idk about that or form, I run but I always feel like I'm doing it wrong too. Am I going to slow? How far do I have to go to consider myself a runner? Do I have to run X amount a week to be a runner? Seriously questions I ponder.

If you can find a good flat field, or that beach in your pic, and run barefoot just like you did when you were a kid.
You'll be landing somewhat mid-foot, not on the heel. You land a right foot down about 90 times a minute, or 3 landings every 2 seconds.
You'll be able to breath comfortable enough you could talk in short sentences, but not sing, or hog a conversation.

Then imitate that feeling in shoes.

Even that attempt to bring back the fun as a kid doesn't always work though.

Because indeed, there is a difference between getting out there and just running, and hope you pull good form together, but in the meantime could be injuring things for worse effect down the road.

    Experience based on knowledge.

If you can be good about listening to your body. usually that is a worn-out phrase, because people distract their minds so bad there is no way they could listen. But turn the music off and truly feel if anything feels funny or not comfortable.

There are of course some great youtube videos on good running form.

Oh good I am not alone. I feel like a dork when I run, like I am not doing it properly either. I wonder if I don't lift my legs up high enough off the ground. I run really slow as well I think. I am starting to feel more confident as time goes on though.

Look up Chi running, pose running and good form running.

I believe running with proper form can help reduce the chance of injury

Yesss, run on a flat surface. Your hips are probably wacked because you're running on one side of the road. Most roads are beveled for drains.

Make sure you get properly fitted for running shoes!

...that's my only advice, after getting tendinitis three times when I tried to become a runner. :P I, apparently, run wrong. And it can hurt you. So now I stick to martial arts. lol

Things that help me, especially with my hip....

Keep your back upright, no shoulder slumping
Shoulder back opening up your chest
Head high, neutral, not really looking up or down
Your arm movements should be front to back, not side to side. Like you are punching in front and elbowing in the back

All of this I got from reading Chi Running as another poster suggested. I didn't buy into all of the concepts but there is good info in there if you take what you need. I notice after I start to fatigue I have to consciously make sure my back is straight and I am not slumping at the shoulders. It makes a huge difference, at least for me.

    Thanks all!

I will look up some videos, good idea. I also think it might be time for new shoes - I have good ASICS but they are a few years old now.

^^^ This. Google "chi running." Or read the book. You will find some helpful, basic pointers about proper running form -- pointers that you will be able to use pretty easily.
