What do to while injured, for exercise?

Hiya,
Anyone got any tips for exercise I can do with a hurt rib? It is either bruised or broken, hurts bad to breathe so I've just been doing short, 10 minute walks, nothing too strenuous. Can anyone think of anything lower body for lifting that I could do, that doesn't make me puff too much?
(My nurse helpfully told me that even if it is broken, there is absolutely nothing they can do about it, so it is just a matter of time! As I've just started out though, I'm itching to get going!)
Thanks
C

Couldn't agree more.... ^^^^^^..... The ribs are located right in the center of your core. Personally, I know of very few exercises that do not involve the core in some way, shape, or form!!

I would just work on getting better!

I got a cracked rib mid-Dec. The doctor advised to lay off the exercise for a fortnight and by the time that fortnight was up, it didn't hurt so much anymore and I went straight back in to my running regime. I'd say take some time off to allow yourself to recover. There's not much you can do because anything that causes you to breathe heavier or strain even a little will hurt like hell. Hope it heals quickly and all the best for your recovery :flowerforyou:
  • The nurse's advice was to keep active, i.e. not stay in bed, but I'm struggling to find much to do that doesn't make me breathe harder. Cause, well, I'm REALLY unfit!!! Just don't want to gain loads while I wait to get better!
  • Thanks Kell! Great to hear that it might only take a couple of weeks, that is heartening!! I am walking like a 90 year old at the mo!

Wrap it with a ace bandage around your torso snugly. You don't need to exercise to lose weight btw. Just eat less.

Clean your house and watch what you eat, time will fly by and you'll be fit for the gym in no time.
  • Thanks everyone. I like the housecleaning tip - my house could definitely use it! Also the Ace bandage tip might make me look a bit skinnier...silver lining to every cloud!
  • Just an update - that hurt ribs feeling got worse and I finally went to A&E, where they did a scan that found a big pulmonary embolism, blood clot on the lung. By then my right lung was barely functioning and I could only breathe in little puffs. I'm finally home again but it was a very scary experience! So if you hear someone say that they have pain in their ribs that changes position or extends to their shoulder - they should get checked out ASAP!

I'm recuperating for the next 3 months but am just glad to be home, be alive, and see my children's faces again.

Oh my goodness! That's so scary, glad you're OK now. Just rest now, not laying flat in bed but nothing at all strenuous - that was such a close thing! Get well soon :flowerforyou:

  • Thank you both for your kind words. The wildest exercise I'm doing now and for about 3 more months of Warfarin, is breathing! With a bit of slow shuffling! Can't wait to get all better though!!!!!
