Food Before / After workout

Hi Everyone,

I have started going the gym, I usually do an hour on the treadmill brisk walking, so I break a sweat but it's nothing too strenuous.

I currently have a small amount of porridge with cinnamon it in about 30 mins before a workout and a pear in the car before I go home from the gym. Of course with plenty of water throughout.

Is this good enough or is there anything else I should be doing/eating?

Bare in mind I don't eat any bread/wheat at all.... so no toast, cereal etc.
