What should I do???

You know how when the bad news starts rolling it all comes in at once?? Well that's how my life pretty much had been until the last couple of weeks. 2014 seems to have been an excellent year!!! (cross fingers!! I hope that continues to be the case for everyone!)

So a little background, I had an interview a couple of weeks ago and they seemed to like me there and I enjoyed the place. I felt that there was plenty of opportunities to gain experience in my profession and grow (I'm a new grad so this is big for me!). It's a really prestigious place as well!! They haven't told me if I officially have the job or how many hours I would get (they were hiring both full time and per diem) but they did request for me to provide references/do a background check right after the interview. Usually I don't mind waiting but I have another possible opportunity that I am considering. It is a full time temporary position at the place I was interning at while in school. I was working there for 2 years so I know the people and the system, as well as any expectations for me. The concern I have is that there is not much opportunity to grow and I'm not very comfortable doing the position that they offered me. What would you do...? (Please disregard salary..it is most likely going to be similar for the 2 places)

Choice 1. Prestigious location with professional growth opportunity and unknown hours (I was told they were also constantly busy here)

Choice 2. Not super comfortable with the potential position, no professional growth, but know the people (I know this place can be busy but do-able)

Fantastic life stories and experiences generally don't start by staying in your comfort zone.

    There are the exceptions, however.

Comfort in the sense that I'd be working with potentially dangerous and VERY expensive chemicals. (Aka chemotherapy)
  • Phone option 1 and tell that that you need to know whats going on as you have another offer, simple then see what their reaction is

I agree and tried but HR lady has been constantly unavailable and hasn't called me back. I don't want to come off as a pain in the @$$ before I even start working there.

Is Choice 1 a done deal or are you still waiting for a final offer? Can Choice 2 wait for your offer to come through? If you decline Choice 2, is there a chance you WON'T get Choice 1?

I have a personal bias in favor of scientists working with chemotherapy and trying to improve it, but because this is a career and not altruistic, you need to think long term here.

Choice 1 is not set in stone and that's what makes me nervous and makes me want to consider choice 2. Choice 1 could also potentially only offer a couple of hours in a week so I could potentially even work at both places it's just a matter of finding out if they would give me those full time positions they have available or just per diem.

Choice 1 doesn't know anything about choice 2 so no..that wouldn't affect anything. But choice 2 knows about choice 1 because my manager there wrote me a recommendation (I'm trying to get in touch with him now to find out when he would need my response by)

Love your bias and wish I could say I'm that great person but I'm not a research scientist. Just a pharmacist.

    Just workout.
Let the frustration out and think when you're all sore and relaxed from being sore.

Don't sell yourself short! Do what feels right to you! I think you should choose option 1. Best of luck!

    Haha yes..working out did help.

So update: got in contact with old manager and he said I should just try to go for both positions so I can keep my options open. Both places should understand if I have other opportunities and there shouldn't be any hard feelings to come about my final decision. So he's gonna put in a good word for me. :) thanks for your opinions guys!!
