From what I have read, a person doesn't do a 20-day water fast right out the gate. People start out by doing a 24-hour water fast the first week; then a 2-day fast the second week; a 3-day fast the third week, etc.
Also, supposedly, when you break the fast, you have clear broth, fresh squeezed juices, "light" fare, such as steamed salmon, chicken breast, etc. before going back to solid food.
So, the benefit is reduced calories during and after the fast. Over time, the reduced calories are cumulative and the type of food ingested has fewer calories.

Yes. This is a good idea.4

How did you even find this zombie thread?!3 -

The linked website in this post is a cesspool of pseudoscience. OP, please ignore.7 -

OP is long gone. Thread is over 3 years old before the random newbie bump.
I just love when people google weird *kitten* and then resurrect a dead thread with their first post.7 -

I've seen some videos now of people who have been on a water fast for over 20 days.
When I read up on it, all I can really find is that you consume nothing but water.
Bit crazy maybe, but don't you actually die after about three weeks without food?
Has anybody else tried to waterfast for over that amount of time?
It depends on how overweight they were to begin with, and how active they are. But usually they are sneaking in some food in spite of their claims. Most people would be too weak to function after a few days of water only- have you ever met someone doing it for religious reasons?0 -
You probably won't die but it's not a good idea and certainly wouldn't be advised by any sane person on here.1

I've decided to not reply to this topic but I can't delete it.2

I'm concerned. OP only had 2 posts, both in this thread, before they vanished forever. You don't suppose...5

The human body can survive 60-70 days with no food if they consume lots of water. It's not pleasant, but that's how long it would take to die.
People who do fasts like that have one of these reasons:
1. Religious purposes
2. Protesting something
3. Have an eating disorder3 -
