Here's a really great article for people just starting to incorporate regular exercise into their lives! There is a lot of useful advice here.

I particularly loved this quote: "a healthy lifestyle is a skill you work and get better at—not a thing you just get up and start doing one day." So true!

I'm really glad you posted this. Thank you. I can exercise now, but I have bookmarked it to remind myself of why to keep exercising and why to be nice to myself about it.

When I first started doing session with a personal trainer I almost felt like I was wasting everyone's time because there was so little I could do. I'm now up to going to the gym 3-4 times a week and I've seen improvements in what I'm able to do. The hardest thing to do is just taking the first step, getting off the couch, not drinking that soda, not having that cookie - something, anything, is a great step in the right direction.

The only point I have to disagree on (for me, personally) was the insistence on not doing it alone. The article advocates finding others to exercise with and hold you accountable in order to ensure success. I'm sure that is really relevant advice for many, but not necessarily applicable to all. Some folks really thrive on outside influences, especially when getting started. Others need to find that fire internally.

I prefer to work out alone, get in my zone, and push myself. I find that doing it for (or with) someone else doesn't really motivate me, it just shifts the accountability off of myself. This is for ME!

I agree. I prefer to do it alone because I'm doing it for me and no one else. I find if I share too much then I'm always worried about what someone else thinks if I fail or don't meet their expectations.

Since I'm trying to improve my own health, I'm very motivated. I was recently diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes which is very close to being under complete control and I'm scheduled for bilateral knee surgery in April. Stating the excercise prgram was one of the toughest things I had to do. I set my own goals low and have building them up which seems to be working.
