Gut Pain

Has anyone experienced this: an ache in central part of the stomach that doesn't feel like constipation, nausea, diarrhea. The only thing that makes it feel better is putting pressure on it, like pushing on my gut or laying over something hard and putting weight on my stomach. It always happened in the late afternoon usually serval hours after I have eaten lunch. It goes away again sometime in the middle of the night. My doctor has told me to increase my fiber intake and stop eating complex carbs, but it hasn't gotten better yet.

I'm not looking for medical advice. I'm just curious if anyone has felt a pain like this and anecdotally if a diet change helped.

  • I used to get horrible pains like that. Does your stomach also get bloated and hard? My mom has this problem but hasn't really figured it out. I stopped eating gluten and dairy for the most part and don't get stomach aches anymore.

Do you use a lot of artificial sweeteners? I find too much aspartame or even Splenda will do that to me. I had to stop drinking Crystal Light because it got so bad my doctor thought I was having gallbladder attacks until we narrowed it down to sweetners. It is just a thought.

Do you drink a lot of coffee or carbonated drinks that have acid (most) or eat other high-acid stuff? My acid issues feel like you describe in that spot. (Then they get like a knife when they are really bad, but they didn't do that for years.) Try a Pepcid (or even stronger: OTC omeprazole) by lunch for a week or two and see if that helps. I don't know if it will, but trying the medicine is an easy way to see if the problem is acid :) If it is, see your doctor, though. Don't take those types every day for a long time without a doctor's supervision.

edit: oh, you asked for dietary changes. For that route, you'd have to cut out coffee, etc for at least 2-3 weeks and see if that helps if it's acid related.
  • My husband had something similar and it was a side effect of heartburn. He had no heartbun symptoms but the acid was wesring on his stomach. A few weeks of antacids helped!

Thanks for everyone's help, I can't quite narrow it down to a specific food yet, but I am going to try.
