The tools here can definitely help. I was diagnosed as pre-diabetic in 2011 and there was no way I was going to end up like my mom, stabbing a needle into myself every day. Diabetes and high blood pressure are the common killers in my family so I couldn't fiddle around any longer.
I am now within 10 pounds of my goal weight, off my blood pressure pills, now take no medications whatsoever, and am no longer pre-diabetic (as well as no longer anemic, tired and rashy). While it is possible, through excellent nutrition and informed choices, to reverse Type II diabetes, I didn't want to wait until I was diagnosed with the inevitable.
My lifestyle change has been so worth the effort. I'd forgotten what feeling good felt like.
I highly recommend "The End of Diabetes" by Dr. Joel Fuhrman (and "Eat To Live" or "Eat For Health" and his cookbook as well).

I weigh over 300 pounds and I control mine by diet alone. I had my a1c done a month ago and everything was normal range. I don't miss the candy, chips and soda at all.

Diet and exercise does work because my glucose levels where like 230 and I have so much diabetes in my family, even loss of limbs. But I asked the Dr to give me a chance without drugs. I was 350 lbs at the time and I am only about 5ft 6in. My level now is about 90 when i do that pin prick thing. ( my mom has hypoglycemia so she has the tester). No pills ever taken. And I loss 150 pounds but now I am here because I was gaining weight back. But I am on no meds ( but I started Testosterone therapy this year under my Dr. direction and it has given me energy back and I feel good ).

Congratulations on the 17 pound weight loss! That's fantastic! My mom was Type 1 and it really was a struggle for her. She's passed now, but while she was alive, I always kept my ear out for all the new studies and new findings to help her stabilize her blood sugar. One thing I learned (2002) was that artificially sweetened drinks could cause blood sugar to go a little haywire, even though there are no calories in it. It had to do with the brain's expectation of something sweet being consumed. Also, they thought there was a link between trans fats and unstable blood sugar. I don't know how that research turned out. Lately, I read that the natural sweetener Stevia has been proven to stabilize blood sugar, and has been used as a folk remedy in other countries for many years.

Good luck with going the no-meds route. The natural way is certain to be the healthiest.
