At my age??

I was just having a conversation with a co worker who thinks it's crazy that I'm lifting heavy weights. The other day she asked if I just wanted to be a "she-hulk." I explained that women do not produce enough testosterone naturally to become "she-hulks." Well, a little bit ago, we were talking about lifting and I was saying what bf% I wanted to be. I said, "basically, I want everything to go where it's supposed to be." She said, "At our age, nothing is going to go where it's supposed to." :noway: I told her my butt is already lifting from the squats.

I'll be 39 in a couple of weeks. I think that with the exception of my bewbs, everything should be going to where it's supposed to if I stick with the heavy lifting from now on.

Typical sis-science (female version of bro-science?). There's another thread on here this morning that's along the same ilk. Where did we ever get the idea that 1200 calories is enough to live on and that we can't or shouldn't weight train?

It is SO good for us to weight train. Not only does it give us functional strength to do every day things and save us from being weak vulnerable females but it gives us healthier bones, makes us look amazing and helps burn calories so we can eat more (among other benefits)! What's not to love in that scenario?!

I had a big talk with my Aunt last summer re: the whole bulking thing. Years and years ago my cousin told her that she would get bulky and for some reason she believes him over her niece (me) who's been very successful with weight loss, lifts but isn't bulky and is a certified personal trainer (meaning I actually have the education, not just parroting something I read/heard somewhere). :sigh: People will believe what they want to believe no matter what you say.

I work with people who are so ignorant as to anything healthy or fitness related. I wanted to scream at them for the longest time and tell them everything I have learned but the truth is they just don't want to hear it. Point being, you can't argue with ignorance. Sounds like you should just take everything in that this woman has to say, don't plead your case and then, watch her get angrier and angrier when you prove her wrong. When all of a sudden everything of yours IS where YOU want it to be and she is still the same, maybe then she will want to listen to you. Good luck hun! :flowerforyou:

I am almost 50 and I hit the gym 6 days a week. My neighbor said "aren't you afraid of getting huge muscles?" I want to get fit and toned. Maybe she's jealous?

    Continue to eat right....
Continue to lift weights, and I mean lift weights.

    Enjoy the results.

I am 36....I am decent for my age.....
So just takes a little determination.....
Don't listen to people saying otherwise....especially if they aren't doing it themselves.

I currently squat 150, Deadlift 215, bench 90, Rows 100, and OHP 70. All with barbells. I love it, the feeling I get from it (I feel like a bad** ), and I love the small, but consistent changes it's making. I don't know why I've never tried it before!

"Co-sign" means "I agree with this."

    She was agreeing with you.

My old butt is in about the same place it was when it was a young butt. It took a vacation south for a while in my 30s, but it went back where it is supposed to be in my 40s.

The love the same women that take calcium supplements and drink a ton of milk to avoid osteoporosis, but don't get how weights can help bone density in the long run.

I thought from your co-workers comments that you'd be in your 50's or older...lol. Ernestine Shepherd didn't start working out until she was 56, now she's 77 & in the Guiness Records as the oldest competitive female body builder. She looks fantastic, like a model. I hope I look like THAT when I'm her age....or even at my current age...LOL. Here's a story about her...send it to your co-worker & ignore any future comments.

Did your co-worker have to double swallow her big mouth full of food before she hated on you?

Remarks like that get me stoked. I hope you feel the same way.

I have to wonder if exercise and moderation will ever catch on...

Geez...I didn't find the gym til I was 50! I took too much "time off" though the past couple of years and now am back at it.

Too late? Heh. Nope. I can still turn a head or two (in a certain white-haired demographic at least! LOL)

I am just getting into lifting and I also just turned 36. I wish that the "bulk" lie hadn't been so rampant when I was younger. It was all "cardio, cardio, cardio" .... I hate cardio. I feel so much better focusing on strength training. I also don't dread workouts. I dread cardio. I see so much progress with weights and cardio just makes me tired :(

    <<< 39. 40 in September.

The person who gives me grief about lifting is my massage therapist. She says things like "why would you want to build all that muscle?"

Most other people say things like "you look great."

It's aggravating, but like others said, I'm just going to continue doing what I'm doing and see her reaction at the results. Sometimes, she can be supportive, just not about the lifting weights too much.
