Im not sure if thats what its called .. Seated bench press ? Its a weight training machine where i have to push the bars above my head ..so when im seated with my back against the seat and lift , i feel pressure on my mid back as well as my arms .. Is this the right technique ? I wanted to know the right way to do it so i dont injure myself .. My gym trainer says its alright , but i wanted to confirm with you guys ..
Thank you
Thank you

my advice...ditch the machine and either do barbell bench press, or dumbbell bench press on flat bench.....0

Id go with the trainer who showed it to you and has seen you perform the exercise.0

that is probably a seated overhead press or military press. Yes, it should hit shoulders, upper back and core a bit.0

That's overhead press, and yes, you'll feel it in your back as well, those are stabilizers. I agree with the previous poster though, lose the machine and use either a barbell or dumbells.

I think you are right..I read 'bench press' in title and misread OP..
either way, I still say ditch the machines and go to barbells and/or dumbbells...0 -

I have undergone an abdominal surgery a few months back .. The doc has given me a go ahead .. so the trainer prefers to start slow .. Where i dont exert too much pressure on my abdomen .. So i dont think i can do barbells right now0 -
Shoulder press machine.
Personally I dont like them as they force you to lift on a path that might not be the best for you. I prefer dumbbells or barbells but yes seated shoulder press (machine or free weight) engages the whole upper body.0 -

Given that you recently had surgery, I'd say your trainer is right on the money. But as soon as you're able to safely do it, I'd switch to doing either seated or standing OHP/Military Press with a barbell. Machines are fine up to a point, but free weights will hit a muscle group better, since the machine is no longer balancing the load for you.0 -

Too much strain on the back is probably telling you that you are not bracing your core enough. Since you have recently had surgery it is not surprising that your back is compensating for weaker abdominal muscles.0 -

ok...I don't see why you could not start with like 10# dumbbells or something light...but go with what the trainer is telling you for now ..however, once you are healed and if the trainer trys to keep you away from compound movements/barbell/dumbbell then get a new trainer...0 -
