fasting glucose test question

I was hoping someone would have some info for me. I went to the doctor today and he ordered a fasting glucose test and HBA1c blood work. I was thinking about fasting 12hrs before and going first thing in the morning. Here's my dilemma...I'm not proud of myself but I have totally gone off my eating plan for the last few days and today included have ingested ALOT of sugar. This is very uncharacteristic for me since I typically eat pretty clean. I succumbed to my emotional eating the last few days. So I don't know if it's wise to go tomorrow for this test. I want it to accurately reflect my blood sugars. I can always go next week..surely by then my eating will be back to normal. What are your thoughts on it?? Go tomorrow or wait a bit??

I'd wait! I had to get one of those while pregnant and did horrible on it because I had cake the previous day. I had to retake it and ate NO sugar whatsoever for a few days pre test and passed with flying colors.
Wait and take it next week if you can!0 -
Thanks for your input..I was kinda thinking the same thing.
Anyone else have an opinion on this???0 -
I think it may depend on why you're taking the test.
I took it 2 weeks ago to check if I was developing any insuline resistance (which I'm not, whoohoo!).
I normally eat very low carbs but for 3 or 4 days before the test I had been enjoying some bread and pasta and carbs-rich food (due to the italian in-laws visiting me)... anyway, the test came back ok so it didn't really make a huge difference for me.0 -
HBA1c is an average of your blood glucose for 3 months so it shouldn't be affected by your sugar binge. As for your fasting blood glucose that's your blood glucose at that moment so if you were good the day before your exam then you should get a decent number. I wouldn't worry about it.

Thanks everyone for your input on the matter.0

Hi,
fasting glucose is a check that your glucose levels are appropriate when you have fasted. I'd recommend checking it anyway, even if you have eaten a lot the day before. If your glucose is under control it shouldn't make a difference, and if your glucose is still high after a 12 hour fast then that can indicate to your doctor that you may have a glucose issue.
I used to work on scientific studies that looking at blood glucose response after eating something early in the morning after an overnight fast. We always did a baseline measure and if someone was particularly high after an overnight fast they were referred to a doctor.0
