What causes this and am I doing something wrong?

Okay, I only recently started trying to get back into shape. Before I explain the details, a bit of info that might help - I am on Topamax for epilepsy - which is known for causing muscle mass depletion. I don't know if that has anything to do with this.

When I do exercising - I do the following: DDR, AbRoller, sit-ups, stretching (first, of course, learned that as a kid it's best to stretch everything before exercising or bad things will happen), treadmill, pushups, squats, lunges, etc - basic things I can do in my house.

My problems are: Afterwards, my legs and ribs hurt - and I don't mean like muscle burn (i know what that feels like, i was on a swim team) - it's like bone and joint pain.... and I'll start having horrible coughing fits and trouble breathing.

Am I doing something wrong? Have I forgot a basic something I should be doing first? Am I tackling too much cardio? Or is this normal?

***Consult your family doctor  . Only they will be able to tell you if something serious is going on.

Outside of this, I would recommend spending a few weeks easing into your workouts. Definitely stretch and warm up, but more then that, lower your reps/weight for a few weeks and allow your body to adjust. Sometimes, the supplement linked below can help. If you do go with the supplement, know that it took me a good month or two before I started noticing a differences. I can't say for certain it was the supplement, or my body further adapting to my routine, but it may be worth a shot given that it's only a few dollars a month?

I agree that you should consult your doctor.

That being said, you should ease into exercise if you haven't been doing any at all. It's best to start out slow/small and work your way up to avoid injury. I know in the beginning it's hard to take such advice because you feel motivated and want to go all out, but in the end, going all out is what will fizzle you out. So, start small and work towards the bigger goal.
