Yoga question

I've really gotten into yoga the past little while - I went to loads of classes in Toronto when I was on holiday and found an amazing yoga studio, and I am looking for a good palce in my city just now to go to classes.
There's one thing I found which I had problems with - any pose which involved me putting much weight on my hands (especially the palms, but I am not advanced enough to be off the palms and on my fingertips!) I find quite painful. Some days more than others, but generally even with downward I find I sometimes have to come out of the pose because it's too sore!
Is there anything I should be doing differently? I have bought an extra thick yoga mat, which seems to help a little, but it's still vey sore! Help!

Hi there!
Try this -
Spread all of your fingers out and try pressing your whole hand into the mat, really focusing on the fleshy part of your thumb and the middle part of your hand (palm). Try to equally distribute all of the weight across your hand. This should take some pressure off of your wrists.0 -

I agree with kdooks. Try to move your weight out of your wrists by pressing more with the base of the fingers. If that still doesn't work, try turning your hands out 45 degrees so the middle fingers point to the outer corners of the mat- for both Down Dog and Handstand - For push-up pose (chaturanga), up dog, or cobra, you can always do them on your fists if the pressing more with the base of the fingers doesn't work.0

If you are going to yoga classes, talk to the instructors before the class starts and let them know where you're having troubles. A friend of mine broke her hand a couple of months ago and has gotten her cast off and feels comfortable enough to go back to classes. Her instructors were aware of her injuries and could then give her some modified poses so that she wasn't putting so much weight on her hands.0
