Is anyone familiar with the hungry girl cookbooks? I have an opportunity to buy one if her books for about half of retail? I only was able to glance at the book. Are the recipes simple and pretty easy? Time wise are they time consuming or not? Are the ingredients pretty well known? If more than one or two items are unknown to me I won't try it? I was able to get a book free with 3 or 4 recipes and one did 8 servings. Are the meals lower in calories cause they are small? I would like to add the occasional lower calorie meal for my son who is always hungry but has little time to be active due to school and winter. I could borrow the book from the library but ours has limited hours and I will have had to choose to order it or not before its open again.

Pretty easy, and it's also really easy to make substitutions. Not too time consuming. Very well known ingredients. Meals are typically lower in calories because she uses low-fat alternatives and lots of veggies. I will typically sub out the low-fat for a regular version of the ingredient myself, because I would rather have the full-fat version, or that's already what I have at home and don't want to buy something else. I don't think the meals are that small, and depending on your calorie goal, you can eat a couple servings for not too much calories-wise, if you think it isn't enough for you for one portion.0

Check out the hungry girl website. I don't have the cookbook, but I imagine it would be a collection of things similar to what is on the website. That should give you an idea of what the recipes will be like and whether or not they would work for you.0

Thanks. I will explore the website and maybe make something from it this weekend.0

If you do want to buy the books try looking online. I picked up one of them for almost twenty at barnes and noble. Then I tried ebay and found an auction where I ended up getting two books for the price of the one I'd bought, and another one for 99 cents plus $3.55 for shipping.
Also, she has a new one coming out next week, the Hungry Girl diet. Looking forward to trying this one, but again I might have to try online. Cover price is around $26 but I can pre-order from Amazon for fifteen-something.0 -
Meh, wasn't impressed. I like it when she sneaks in veggies in places you may not expect but I find a lot of her recipes call for premade or processed ingredients. If you are a beginner cook, or new to healthy swaps for your favorite recipes- try it. But if you are experienced or prefer whole food cooking, it's kinda a waste. I checked one out from the Library and returned it within a couple of days.0
