Deep fried ice-cream

I am afraid to look up the calories for deep fried icecream. I went with a friend to the city for the day and brought a bag with healthy snacks. We are both overweight, she more-so. So when she took me to her favorite mexican restaruant for lunch she ordered for herself deep fried burrito's, I ordered salad with grilled chicken. Then it started. She ordered for us chips and salsa starter, I let that pass. Then she ordered us a pitcher of margerita, I quickly added "virgin please we are driving". After the main course, I had already eaten too much and stated that I was stuffed. She insisted we couldn't come to this restaraunt with out trying the deep fried ice cream. She proceeded to check with the chef that it was gluten free (for me) and order us one each. Beause she was taking me to lunch and she was being so generous, all I could manage to get out was. " please make it one order, I am too full to have one to myself"
Is it paranoia or is it sabatoge? I have made it clear to freinds and family that I have to lose weight or I will need back surgery. I thought that would keep people from discouraging me from my objective.
But I feel bad about not recording the icecream. I recorded everything else from the day and was under. But I feel like a cheat.
And I feel like I didn't handle the situation as well as I could have.
She is a dear friend, but sensitive. How could I have handled this different?

You should record the ice cream, it will show you how much it was and next time you can see if it was worth it.0

You are going to have to speak to your friend. Leave her weight out of the discussion - this is about you. Tell her how important it is to you and how poorly you felt when you returned from the outing. Ask her for her support!0

It is SOO hard turning others down, especially when they feel like they are doing something "nice" for you. This is where you need to work on your strength and will power. "No, thanks" has to become your friend If they push, kindly remind them that you have this surgery looming over your head, and every food decision counts. Put in these terms, I don't think others will take offense.
With that being said, you tried and tried to set limits throughout the course of the meal - now you need to work harder on enforcing those limits. This isn't easy, and these situations will come up again and again. Practice will make it easier.
Now go ahead, record the ice cream, and move on. Schedule an extra workout to account for those calories. The food journal doesn't work if we are only partially honest with it.
You have done an amazing job! Don't let this derail you0 -
I'm sure it's the guilt because she can't control her own eating. I often find it's the people who are out of control themselves that push you to consume when you don't want to.
I have no idea about the calories of that... I didn't know there was such a thing! But I would say record it if you can – even though the number will be red it will be a weight off! You can balance it out over the rest of the week.

I'd say amend your log and log the deep fried ice cream. If you do the denial thing (I'm guilty of it), and don't log it, it doesn't mean that you didn't ingest it. The calorie log is for your benefit, and you don't get punished if you go over. To make up for it, try to go under your calorie target for the next few days. Also, try to put in a bit of exercise or if you already do, add in some extra time for a while to counteract those calories. My wife has back problems so there are only certain types of exercises she can safely do, but she finds walking isn't that stressful on her back.
As far as how to tell your friend, I'd say you handled your meal with her okay, because you need to weigh her feelings with your food plan. I'd probably have done the same thing. But the next time, you can use a little humor at the beginning of the meal, and say something like "I think I put on 10 pounds last time because of that fried ice cream, and I'm still trying to work it off. My doctor said I either skip dessert this time, or he'll start charging me by the pound for doctor visits."
Whatever you say, make sure you mention it at the start of the meal. If she wants the double chocolate fudge peanut butter and ketchup sundae, great. You'll just abstain.0 -
I can sympathise with your situation, my entire family is the same way....fortunately for me, I live 35+ hours away from all those temptations. I was curious after reading your post as to how many calories IS in deep fried ice cream. I have never tried any myself but have always wondered if it were any good. I LOVE mexican foods, this just happens to be something I have never tried....
I am glad I read your post and decided to look up deep fried ice cream in the database just to get a general idea....I certainly have lost the curiosity of trying it after finding out how many calories it has and how many grams of sugar. I just had to respond and thank you for posting this to the message boards...it saved me! I wish you luck with handling the situation with your friend and hope to see more success as you continue on in your journey! :flowerforyou:0 -
Thanks for the encouragement. I added the deef fried ice cream. A half portion is 550 calories with 50 grams of fat. I am so glad I didn't eat one on my own or it would take me hours to burn it off. I am going for an hour work out. Then to work. It feels like punishment but it will remind me what it's worth to say "no thanks"
ON the brighter side I will remember that 22 pounds gone is my reward for persistance.0 -
She probably wasn't trying to sabotage you; she probably just didn't want to feel guilty for eating everything that she ate and wanted a conspirator. The best thing you can do is just say no. You don't have to explain yourself. If she orders for you, just don't eat it. She probably won't do it a second time if she doesn't like to waste money.0

You were trying to be polite and have good intentions. You're a good friend for that. It's too bad that your friend doesn't see how hard you're trying and realize that you've said no politely and she shouldn't push it on you. It's one of the harder parts for me- I would log the ice cream so you don't feel like a cheat. I hope it was yummy and worth it!~ It's okay to splurge sometimes but not as fun when someone is choosing the time for you.0

One portion 1100 calories, and lots of fat & sugar.
The thing that tasted good was the cornflake crust. What didn't feel good was the coating of grease feeling that you get in your mouth. NOT WORTH IT.0
