How have your taste buds changed?

There are foods that I now eat regularly that I wouldn't have touched last year. There are foods that I didn't like the taste of last year, but now I can tolerate. The biggest one for me is how my taste buds for salt have changed. Now that I am being more conscious of my sodium intake I have seriously reduced the amount of salt I add to my food and even try to buy salt free snacks like unsalted nuts and unsalted pretzels. I used to add salt to my microwave popcorn and don't need to do that anymore. I used to add salt to all of my cooked veggies and now I enjoy the flavors of the veggies and don't need salt to choke them down. I also used to think I hated plain water, but now I see how silly that is.

To be honest, they haven't. The only thing that's really changed for me is that soda really doesn't taste as good as it used to now that I drink so much water. Everything else (donuts, pizza, ice cream, candy) tastes just as good or better lol.

I don't like how fatty foods seem to coat your mouth. I never have noticed that till now.
Super sweet has become sickly sweet.
    But I still love salt.
    Working on it.

I like cooked oatmeal now. I have never liked it before. It was definitely a consistency thing though moreso than taste. I like pickled beets which I I thought tasted like dirt before. I still hate the way raw celery tastes. :)

I never really liked onions or spinach before until I found out how healthy they are. I learned to tolerate them and eventually became used to them. I don't mind eating them now.
  • Completely agree with you on the salt thing -- I used to put salt on everything. I craved salt and would seriously overeat anything salty (salted peanuts were the worst offender). Now, I use it sparingly (but still have binge tendencies on salted peanuts which is why I only go with dry roasted no salt peanuts for snacks). Things generally taste better to me now and I almost pucker up like I had been eating a lemon when I taste something too salty. Cutting back on a lot of the processed carbs helped with my sweet tooth so now an apple is nicely sweet enough for a treat.

I noticed tha once I ate foods in their natural form I couldn't stand the ones with additives such as peanut butter.
At first I thought natural peanut butter made with just peanuts was disgusting and bland but once I got use to it I really enjoyed it as well as almond and cashew butter. Now there's no way I could ever eat the name brand peanut butters. The last time I tried one it didn't even taste like real peanut butter.
I also love 70% or darker dark chocolate and don't care for milk chocolate anymore because again it doesn't taste as rich. It did take some getting use to but it's so much better and I don't overindulge as I did with milk chocolate because of the high sugar content among other things in milk chocolate.

I taste salt in everything now! I have become a whole foodie over the last two years and now I taste the salt in non-organic raisens! It's so crazy to me, but it's also a scary wake-up call as to how very, very much salt is in the standard American diet. Even with the way I eat now, which is extremely healthy, I still go over my sodium a little bit about half the time. That just proves we need lower sodium foods made more available. Who's with me in the food revolution??!! Lol.

    Good topic Diane :smooched:

Since I have made my lifestyle changes, I have noticed that I like the taste of chocolate less. I find that if I buy a chocolate bar, all I can taste is the wax. I still buy chocolate, but now I buy expensive chocolate (not dark, I don't like it) but I go to a chocolate shop instead of a corner store for my chocolate.

I have also noticed that my husband and I eat out WAY less. We have both found that take out anything leaves us both feeling lethargic, bloated and nauseated. Having said that, I can eat McDonalds way more then he can. Having the sodium allergy, I don't salt my food once it's on the table, I use it very sparingly for cooking and baking.

I'm with you on the food revolution too.
  • If I eat anything too greasy or with too much sodium, I get MISERABLY sick. It feels like I'm going to puke ... I guess my body just totally rejects greasy, salty foods now. Good thing for me, I'd rather sweet stuff over salty, greasy anyday

Oh & I can tolerate more vegetables now and actually choose them over sweet foods. Wasn't too big on celery, broccoli, or cauliflower before and now i am :)

Fresh organic veggies! Nothing like em. I didn't notice how different and wonderful they taste compared to regular store stuff until I started buying at the farmer's market and growing my own. Oh my! Now, I love real veggies. I don't want their flavor hidden behind things like butter and over-the-top seasoning. A little canola oil or garlic...or just steam em and shove in face. Awesome! Same goes for meat and milk. Grass fed beef is so much yummier. My body just feels better with the cleaner/less processed foods. And a definite ditto for the salt!

    I love real food now.

Natural, simple food - can't beat it. I've stopped hiding my food in dressings/ mayo - a little olive oil and lemon juice is a perfect dressing.

Also got over my dislike for oatmeal, always hated the texture, now I eat it every morning, not the packages kind, old fashioned oats with brown sugar, crasins and hazelnuts, barely "cooked" with hot water.

Over the last year I've moved away from eating processed foods - I used to eat a lot, and now I eat almost none (not quite all the way to "none" yet, but pretty close). As a result, I've noticed the following changes in my tastes:

    1) I love the taste of plain, raw veggies - no dressing, no sauce - just the veggies. Same with fruit - I like more fruit now than I used to.

    2) I don't like super salty foods anymore - I don't add salt to anything, and since I'm not eating much processed food, I only get 500-1500 mg of sodium per day most days.

    3) I don't like things that are too sweet . I stopped adding sweeteners to most things (though I still like a little in my coffee  ) Not only are really sweet foods too much for my taste buds, but it gives me a headache (This coming from someone who used to make a batch of oatmeal-peanut butter fudge (with a primary ingredient of sugar) and eat the whole thing within a day or two. )

The salt thing is big for me, too. Now sometimes when I order food in a restaurant, I don't like it because it's often so salty. I don't add salt to eggs anymore -- they taste almost too salty to me with no salt added. It's crazy.

Also, I used to have an insane obsession with chocolate. Don't get me wrong, I still love chocolate; but when I'm craving candy now, I almost always crave sour fruity stuff and not a chocolate bar. I can hardly eat more than once small piece of chocolate at a time without feeling sick because it's so sweet. I used to eat 2 candy bars at a time. 2 "King sized" candy bars. :embarassed:

I get really excited to eat food I would have considered "healthy" food a year ago. I pretty much get excited about every meal! Just imagining the flavors and colors and textures... so good!

Overall, it's like I taste everything I eat in a different way. I appreciate it all so much more than I did before. I thought I was a foodie then but I'm WAY more of a foodie now than ever. It all tastes so good, and it turns out I really don't have to coat everything with cheese or oil or salt or sugar to make it taste good.

OK, i hate to ask, but I have to...would you mind sharing the recipe for the fudge with me. I only make it a Christmas and am looking for something new this year. You can answer via email if you prefer. Thanks :flowerforyou:

Like many have you posted-I can taste the salt and extra salt in EVERYTHING now that I have started to cut back! Its rediculous how salty some things are, and I hardley use any extra salt when I cook now--I just let me husband season his own plate as he likes since he claims its not salty enough. I've also noticed this with sugar...

I have started to like seafood (only ate crab before), and even love sushi other than california rolls now :) Shrimp and Tilapia are yummy!

I've always loved veggies and fruits, and this year I finally had my first garden and can't wait to expand--I enjoy the fresh taste of foods from the garden/farmers market rather than store bought where it ripens on the truck with gas.

I HATE soda of any kind now and rarely drink it and when I do I never finish a glass--I'd rather have water with lemon anyday!

I actually eat veggies now and like many of them now. I am still working on it for sure but I like broccolli, and I eat a salad almost every day. Now if I could learn to eat the salad with NO dressing would be even better......:-)

I totally agree with the salt issue... I don't eat them often, but some Lean Cuisines and Healthy Choice meals are way too salty for me. I only use salt to season SOME cooked foods, not all though.

The taste of artificial sweeteners has become very apparent to me. There are certain brands of yogurt that I can't buy anymore because they have the "funky aftertaste" of the aspartame or whatever is in it. I used to love Diet Pepsi, but now I only drink it occasionally and it's a struggle to get through the can (again, aftertaste).

I'm now a broccoli eater, I have ALWAYS hated broccoli... I discovered it roasted in the oven with olive oil and garlic back in the winter. That's the ONLY way I'll eat it, but I actually crave it now.

Good topic. I agree the greasy fat comment. I don't like burgers much anymore, they're like floating in grease. yuk. and it makes them taste nasty. oh and chocolate, i can't stand milk chocolate anymore, talke about sweet, cant eat it. yuk. there's a few other high sugar things I can't eat anymore to just cant think of them.

However, on the salt thing i had to do the opposite. I've never used much salt in my diet and a fewmonths ago when i had the yearly are your levels good blood work done, my doctor actually told me to add it to my diet. So since I find it hard to put salt in food and not have it taste nasty I have taken to eating normal sunflower seeds, not the low sodium ones.

Yes he did. I live in the desert and sweat a lot. My sodium levels were below the range, which I guess you can die if you don't maintain them at a certain level. So I do have to keep an eye on my salt content in the opposite direction of most people.

Sorry you're not in that position as well. I have to say its kinda nice to be able to just have to worry about sugars mainly, not sugars and sodium. :o)
