  • I've actually been having a similar problem, but only for the last 5 wks instead of your 8. I've been upset over it too. The only thing I can think is the problem is that I'm not tracking accurately. For now, I'm doing a strict meal plan to limit my snacking. I don't know if the problem is that I'm adding calories while I cook or am undercalculating my portion sizes... This week I'm measuring and prepping meals ahead of time. I'm not eating out or drinking alcohol. I'll let you know how it goes.

I think that may be what my problem is
  • I can't believe that you are eating that little and working out every day and not losing weight. Either something has to be very much off about your logging/estimates, or you are eating too little and your body is freaking out.

Yeah, if you're actually working out every day and only eating 1200 calories per day then you should be practically starving and losing weight quickly.

Are you sure you are logging your calories correctly?

I scan everything i eat with the barcode scanner and I try not to eat over what it tells me.. the hardest things for me to log in are things I cant scan like, it I drink a juice that's not listed and drink less than half a cup of it.. or if I eat like 20 grapes or something..

Do you eat your burnt calories back?

    i try not to...should I?
Yes. You keep saying you entered your weight and your goals and MFP gave you 1200 calories. But MFP also expects you to eat exercise calories.

You may wish to look at this calculator: http://www.fitnessfrog.com/calculators/tdee-calculator.html
It incorporates average activity/exercise into your calorie goal.

Your body needs a certain amount of calories to just function: temperature control, organ function, brain function. Try looking up "Basal Metabolic Rate" or BMR...that's the amount you'd need to eat to just lay in bed all day. I assume you do things like get up and use a computer, so you are already above your BMR. :)

The idea is that you NET your calorie goal. if you don't exercise that day, you eat that (remember you still need your organs to work, etc). if you exercise 300 calories away, you really need to eat those back. Yes, you could just skip the exercise and meet your goal without eating more. However exercise is also very good for you.

What exercise means is that you have a higher activity level than a sedentary person. So to lose X pounds at Y rate, you get to eat more than that sedentary person. That "more" is basically that extra that you burn off.
  • I have a few tips based on my own experience and what I've read and seen on here and from other people trying to diet.

    1. Weigh your food, you could be massively over estimating how much you're eating
    2. Make sure when you're logging your calories on mfp you're putting the correct amount and brand of food in, for example, are you really eating 100g of potatoes and not 300g? There can be a big difference in the calories of different brands of food as well, make sure you're checking that the calories you're logging correlate with the packaging on the food you're eating
    3. Eat back at least half of the exercise calories you're burning, I wouldn't personally eat back all of them, as I think mfp over estimates calories burnt. It's important that you don't put your body into starvation mode though or under severe stress from a massive lack of calories, because that can cause water retention
    4. You said you're working very hard but aren't sweating, are you out of breath? Red and hot? Can feel your heart pounding? If not then you're not working hard enough.
    5. Try to add some weights to your exercise routine, they'll help with your weight loss and get you looking more toned
    6. Try not to weigh yourself too soon after a work out, exercise can cause you to retain water. I can gain up to 4 pounds of water after a very heavy cardio/weight training session in the gym, and it takes days to lose it.
    7. Are you scales correct? Do you weigh yourself on a flat surface, naked, in the morning when you first wake up? I find that clothes, time of the day and the flooring I put the scales on can all make a big difference in my weight.

i have been logging thru my Facebook.. I just created this pg because it wont let me post from that acct.. I guess its because it;s FB... I'm 5'4... last yr, without excercise I got down to 204 lbs from 228.. this yr I've been doing the same things... only eating, chicken, turkey, and fish.. fruits and vegetables... I intentionally gained weight the latter part of last yr because i wanted the gastric sleeve surgery... but instead of "cheating" I decided to try to lose this all on my own... I stepped on the scale at the dr's office last wk and it said 230... I been working hard since the beginning of January.. some ppl can tell i've lost a little but I cant because my clothes still fit the same..

When I say I retain a lot of water... I never sweat no matter how much I try... I drink more than I eat and it gets added to my weight... then I'd lose 5 lbs and gain it back again... I wanna give up and do the surgery but I'm trying to stay committed to this...

Um, the surgery is no guarantee. It is easy to either not lose weight or gain it back of you don't make good choices. If you see it as a cure, you won't be successful.
