Advice needed please

42 year old female needing to lose and tone (30-40 lbs...will just depend on how it sits). 17 weeks til BEACH vacation. Any suggestions on how best to proceed? I have lost 12 lbs since the new year just by dropping pop and somewhat watching what I eat. Any advice appreciated. Thank you in advance!

  • You need to drop 30-40/17, which is around 2 pounds a week, requiring a deficit of at least 2 pounds/week. That means you need to cut out a little more than 1000 kcal each day. How you do that and tone at the same time I do not know, but I guess it might work out. The weight loss is a challenge for sure, but not impossible.

My biggest regret was not lifting weights right from the start. I would recommend weightlifting and sticking to your calorie goals, high in protein. You may not be able to lose all the weight you are planning on by your deadline, but weight loss isn't a race and a "quick fix" isn't sustainable.

I guess I need to clarify my wording on that...... I need to lose 30 to 40. I have 17 weeks til vacation. I DO NOT expect to lose that kind of weight in that time frame but would like advice on how best to proceed to get the best results possible in that time frame. Thanks!

    This is great advice!^

XX pounds by XX date may not be healthy weight loss for you. Losing too fast will result in fat+muscle loss....as opposed to mostly fat loss. The result can be a somewhat puffy look.

To keep muscle (helps your metabolism too) & "appear" slimmer....strength training is key.

    Pounds per week
75+ lbs to lose 2 lb range
Between 40 - 75 lbs to lose 1.5 lb range
Between 25-40 lbs to lose 1 lb range
Between 15-25 lbs to lose 1 -.50 lb range
Less than 15 lbs to lose 0.5 lbs range

Agree re weight training. If you are motivated enough and have time enough to work out, daily and be extremely disciplined on your calories, you can lose significant weight in 17 weeks and tone at the same time giving you a fitter appearance. Set your calorie goal 5% lower than what you need to exist, incorporate weight training and cardio daily and then tweak as you start seeing results. Maybe Monday and Thurs upper body + 30 min of cardio, Tue and Fri - lower body +30 min of cardio, then an hour of cardio Wed and Sat, take Sunday to rest and recover. No magic or secrets, just hard work and modifying to fit the way your body responds and works with your schedule such that you will continue to follow a fitness program even after the vacation.

    Good Luck...
