Question about metabolic rate

I hope this doesn’t sound like a stupid question, but I remember reading a long time ago that if you reduce your calories, your metabolic rate adjusts to burn the same amount you are consuming? Wouldn’t this be a constant struggle to lose weight? You would constantly need to reduce calories in order to continue to lose weight. This is likely completely wrong but if it isn’t, does this happen overnight? Or over a period of weeks or months?
