Help with leg lifts

Hello! I'd like to be able to do leg lifts but I'm having trouble with them because of lower back pain. How would you do a modified leg lift? Or should I power through it until I get good at it?

By leg lift, I mean this (hopefully the link works):

Edit: I don't think the link is working.

Yeah, these can hurt your lower back if your abs aren't strong enough, so be careful. You can start at the top and not bring your legs very low, and that's one modification. And you can also use just one leg if you need to and that still works your abs enough if they are not strong enough yet :)

Use your abs, btw, to push your lower back to the floor while you do any of them (pelvic tuck a little). Really contract them before you start lowering or raising the legs. Do not let your back sway (like a big curve in it) while you do it. If that happens, definitely modify!

Thanks for the tips! My back does arch off the floor when I try to do them, so I'll try a modified version tonight.

I usually put my hands underneath my bum/hips (the part of my lower body touching the floor) during this.
Takes a lot of strain off my back.

    Ah here's the link! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JB2oyawG9KI

    Why?

What is it you hope to be training with this exercise?

It's part of a workout I've been doing involving crunches, squats, leg lifts, etc. I also rock climb 3 days a week and run outside.
