Are "trainers" and "cross trainers" the same thing? I have looked everywhere for an answer and I am unable to find one. Shoes are rather complicated in stores now days unless they are "running" shoes. I need a cross training shoe for lateral movement (Insanity, tennis, ect) but al I seem to find are running shoes around here. I DID find some shoes that say they are "trainers" but.... well... ? Also, don't say "go to the mall" or a "sporting goods store"- we don't have one. It is a small town in no mans land Missouri and I don't want to travel 30 min to an hour to a big store....

"Trainers" can refer to a certain type of running shoe.
Cross trainers are often recommended for mixed activities like those, but most of them have the disadvantage of having a raised heel, which reduces lateral stability. And some have a spongy sole, which reduces reaction time and control. I would try a low-heeled shoe with a thin, hard rubber sole, like Keds, Converse, etc. Lace them up tight for good control.0
