Dealing with injury

Hi folks,
I pulled something in my back, nothing major and it is on the mend. I am just wondering how long I should be avoiding lift weights for, the last thing I want is to rush back in to it and hurt myself again. Also, should I be avoiding my running? It doesn't really hurt to run but my posture is a little screwy still and my stride feels kind of off.
Any one have any tips on how to heal up faster, or things to do to get some physical activity while I still manage to rest my back? This is terrible timing since I have been trying so hard to break through a stall on my weight loss.

That sucks lama!
I believe I snapped ups right shoulder in the gym. I tried to push through it and It got to the point of weakness in all of my push exercises. I took a week off and just worked on flexibility movements and stretches. It still acts up from time to time but not as bad. I always stretch before ANY movement now.
I have arthritis in my lumbar area and I find a foam roller REALLYhelps. It feels amazing.
