Logistics of starting weight training

I've been going google crazy and can't seem to find an answer to my predicament:

I started a new work out routine about 5 weeks ago with a personal trainer: 2-3 days weight/circuit training and 2-3 days straight cardio and haven't consistently lost a single pound! (Side Note: I haven't taken official measurements yet, but I feel "smaller")

My "research" told me that its normal to gain weight when starting a weight lifting routine, but is this true? And if so, why? Has anyone had this experience too?

Help/advice/success stories are greatly appreciated! :-)

Yes it is true and has a very simple scientific explanation. Muscle weighs more, so your weight will stay the same or even go up at first. Muscle also uses more calories though, so as you build muscle dropping fat will get easier.

Muscles also retain water as part of the repair process ... a very noticeable event when first starting out. Odds are that you aren't putting on any mass, but your muscles are flooded as they adjust to the additional stresses you are now putting upon them.
