I am my own worst enemy. I start my day eating and exercising very carefully and just barely keeping my daily calories to 1200 after dinner. Sounds great right? Then I start getting the munchies and before I know it I have eaten through another 500 calories by the time I go to bed. I am 195 lbs and need to lose 50 lbs to live a healthier life for me and my wonderful grand babies. Its either I pass or fail every day.

No, it doesn't sound great, actually.
MFP is quite notorious for setting calorie goals FAR too low, regardless of height and weight. For example, it told me to eat 1200, and my BMR (the bare amount of calories I need to LIVE) is 1280. And I am extremely tiny, only 5 feet. So unless you are smaller than me, or bedridden, it is almost a CERTAINTY that you are eating too little. (This can result in lean muscle loss, chronic fatigue, metabolism damage, and bingeing due to over-restriction.) At your age, losing lean muscle is the absolute LAST thing you want for your body.

and enter your height/weight/activity level.
Subtract 10-20% from the number it calculates for you, and that is the number of calories you should be eating a day in order to lose weight.0 -

Then figure out what you should be eating and follow a plan with that. Be sure you're getting enough protein to keep you full. Night time eating is my thing, so I understand.

Thanks...I have seen TDEE referenced here, but had no idea what it was. Now I do! It makes me realize that I was not too far over. If I put these calories to good use during the day and eliminate my night snacks, I may be able to do this…one day at a time I guess0

Thanks for your help I did the TDEE calculations and I see what you mean. It makes a big difference. I want to lose this weight so desperately that I was willing to try to stick with the 1200 calories. I will wake up tomorrow and replay my meals and make an extra effort to stop the PM snacks.0

If you ever get really hungry and need to eat at night, just eat something small. Air-popped popcorn is great and has less than 50 calories from what I remember. Or drink some protein water.0 -
Make some cuts during the day to leave space for the evening snacks.0

no. not protein water and popcorn. eat enough legit food during the day and you won't be "OMGIHAZHUNGRY!" at night.0 -
I find that if I don't leave some calories for the evening I end up drinking a lot of water or tea before I go to bed. Then I get up more during the night!
Also, and I know this sounds easier said than done, I just tell myself no because I do not want to go over my calories that day. I can eat again in the morning! It takes willpower, but with practice and better planning it becomes easier.0 -
I am close to same weight and my calorie intake is 1730. Did you set your goal for 1lb a week or 2lbs a week? 2lbs a week is aggressive and not recommended for people who have less than 100 lbs to lose. Try this website to see what your calorie intake should be:
