I have no idea how to dress for my new body!! I lost my weight to the point where i am pretty damn close to my goal weight and I am nice and thin now. So I didnt want to buy the kind of clothes I used to buy because they were oversized and kind of frumpy so i have been buying skirts and dresses and such. The problem is, when I go to put an outfit together I am guaranteed to either look like I stepped out of 1995 (today), a librarian (last night) or Willow from season 1 of Buffy (yesterday). Its so annoying, I have no idea how to dress. Anyone else have this problem and what the hell did you do to fix it?

I see absolutely no problem with an outfit from 1995 or the outfit of a librarian.

Maybe I am walking down the wrong streets, but here in Australia too many people wear flip flops, tank tops and shorts and actually call it fashion. *shudder* too many have dirty and much too long toenails too *doubleshudder*
  • Kick the librarian look up a notch with a nice pencil skirt and tucked in flowy shirt. You'll accentuate your new curves but still look classy. Top it off with some bangles and a long necklace and some colorful heels. Voila!

My problem has been trying to dress my age. I either look too old or too young.

Most days I feel like I look like a woman who is really insecure about aging and trying to dress like a 20 year old or I feel milquetoast bland.

Most of my non-workout wardrobe consists of rock band t-shirts, jeans, and shorts. It is the epitome of giving up, and I really hate the way I dress most of the time. But every time I go shopping, I try on clothing for women "my age" and look like a frump. Nothing fits right or looks right. Hems are too long and collars are too high. But if I try to dress even slightly younger, hems are too short and collars are too low. And when I do find an outfit that looks sophisticated and makes me look like a confident, well-dressed woman in her 40s, it's way too expensive.

I know a lot of it is perception and not reality, but I hate shopping. Hate it.

I'm bad at putting outfits together, so when I go shopping, I have one of the stores employees pick stuff out for me. They're always way better at it than I am.

Go to a department store and ask a sales rep for help. They're really good at that.

I needed a new outfit several years ago for a job interview and the sales rep basically put the whole thing together for me and it was beautiful.

I probably dress too young for my real age, but I pretend to be a lot younger anyway. In any case, http://www.polyvore.com has good ideas, along with where you can buy the items.

Some stores have personal shoppers. One of my favorite stores, Anthropologie, does.
I've also heard good things about stichfix.com if you are more into online shopping.
