In need of advice for a busy mom

Hello everyone. I've been around a while but have not posted here recently. I am needing a bit of guidance, because even though I've lost a lot of weight, I haven't exercised much while losing. Short history- after 2 yrs of losing by just diet changes, I started a running program last June. I fell in love with running, and I've never been one to like exercise. Usually I start something and do not have much follow through. In November, it turned colder and I also was dealing with the passing of my grandfather on thanksgiving day, I have not returned to exercise since then, much to my frustration. I continue to lose weight, but am at the point that I'm debating skin removal surgery. My brain tells me I need to add in weight training, which I've done in the past- when I did it, I was on phentermine, so I was insanely motivated and I had the time to dedicate each day to the gym. Since that was 6 years ago, I have no idea where to begin. Also, my entire life has changed, so I don't have a lot of time. I am not close to a gym, all I have access to is the wellness center provided by my employer......which is scarcely peppered with some weight machines and a few free weights as well as bikes, ellipticals, and treadmills. Right now, I have 1 hour each morning I could commit to since my husband works from 6:30am-6pm (May be changing to later hours soon) I am at work from 8am-5:15pm and have children to pick up dinner to make, and a house to tend to. If I workout close to bed, once children go to bed, I cannot go to sleep for hours after.

So I guess here is my question- my options would be to join Curves, which I could attend every morning. Or I could figure out if the weights at the wellness center are adequate for my needs. Or I could join the Y, but only go 2-3 days a week. What would you suggest I do to start body recomp??? I do not know what to do or where to begin. Please do not be mean or critical, I just am looking for a bit of guidance and advice.

Thanks!!!

Start ANYTHING, assuming no long term commitment is required. While you're actually doing something, read one of the New Rules of Lifting books. That will give you a foundation to know what to look for in a gym. If yours has the right equipment, great. If not, consider if making a change is needed.

The main thing is getting started.

1 hour a day is more then plenty of time to keep fit and build some strength. You can use the treadmill for cardio every day if you like. The main thing is to get the heart rate up. I am not sure what equipment you have available but there are some great body weight exercises that will build strength without dedicated equipment. I would loo towards these body weight exercises and pilaties.
  • Thanks guys. I have gone back and forth on the New Rules of Lifting books....... I will just get it and start there!
