Clean Eating

Does anyone here eat clean? I started a few months ago, but only recently really hunkered down and got into it. I love the way it makes me feel! I don't eat 100% clean, usually more like 80/20 and I do allow a cheat day here and there. So far, so good. The best part is, besides the weight loss and feeling good, is that I'm learning to try lots of different foods I would never had tried before.

Just a heads up that many here react very negatively to the term 'clean eating'.

Personally, I just try to stick to fruits, vegetables, fish, and meat. I feel better after each meal, I hit my macro/calorie goals easier, and I don't stress about what's going into my body. I love to cook and if I can make something from scratch I will choose that option 99% of the time. My own sauces, condiments, stocks, etc.

Some people want processed food, and that's fine. But for me, my 'clean' eating plan works well. Of course, very few people are going to do a 'clean' plan 100% of the time. Eating out would be impossible! The 20% lets you not stress about social situations and the occasional night out.
  • Yeah, I feel like the 80/20 is much more realistic. I have two small children and we like to eat out on occasion.

Why do people here react negatively to clean eating?

Because thats what some people do especially when they eat a certain way themselves and get all preachy about it.

Part of it is their own negative reaction to a diet that cuts out foods they love.

Others are genuinely trying to warn people away from a diet that is, admittedly, hard to follow for some.

Some feel that any diet that 'forbids' some foods is unnecessarily restrictive and harmful.

I understand the reasons, while not necessarily agreeing. Everyone's approach to food is different. I love cooking, love sourcing local & high quality produce, and genuinely have a good time doing stuff like making ketchup from scratch. The restrictions of clean eating don't affect me in a negative way.
  • I am a firm believer in do whatever works for you. There's no room for judgement on others in my book.

I try to avoid processed food as much as I can, but not all the times. Before I started to embark on losing weight I paid no attention to food whatsoever. Now I am reading labels and eat much more veggies than ever before. I try to get all my micro nutrients fro mhealthy food.

Somebody told me once: if your great grand mother would not recognise it as food than don't eat it! That stuck with me.

Do I feel better by eating cleaner? Not really, but it gives me peace of mind.
