general moan

I've been staying with my inlaws this wknd. they are lovely. but Im just irritated at their understanding of all things diet and exercise.
father-in-law argued with me that you could turn fat into muscle and that you can lose fat and build muscle at the same time. oh, and that you build muscles by "stretching" them.
then mother-in-law said that hula hooping "bashes the fat" off her waist. she thinks that "working the waist muscles trims your waist down."
there is no reasoning with them.
can i just say, :explode:

No, there's no reasoning with them because back in the day (I don't know how old they are but I'm 50 and I can remember my father telling me this misinformation. I could bury him in scientific information showing that fat and muscle are two different things and one does NOT turn into the other, but he would never believe anything other than fat could be converted into muscle.
Trying to change their minds or give them correct information isn't going to work because they've believed this information probably long before you were born.
The hula hoop thing isn't correct, but it is kind of a cardio exercise. If mom-in-law wants to believe that her waist will shrink, let her hula-hoop away. If she tries to convince you to hula hoop your way to a newer, slenderer you, smile, nod and ignore her. It's only a weekend.
Oh, yeah, in the distant future, when you're kids try to tell YOU something - remember this!!
Good luck and keep your sanity! :laugh:0 -
Are you sure we don't have the same in laws? lol
Honestly I could have written your post.hahaha My father in law is a know it all about EVERYTHING. There is no sense in arguing with him or challenging him because he believes he is always right. I always walk away extremely frustrated. So I have decided just to sit there and play stupid. I let him say what he wants and i don't challenge him on his information. I just nod politely yet inside I'm frustrated as hell. It's just not worth the argument or tension. My mother in law also hula hoops. She insisted I try it at her house as well. lol I believe for her it is helping because some form of exercise is better than no exercise. For me, it would be a waste of time in comparison to what i do on a daily basis at the gym..
That being said, they are lovely people and treat us very well...we just really disagree on many areas of fitness/nutrition etc.. Stupid and cheerful.0
