Does anyone use a heart rate monitor to assist their training regime? Are there any reccommendations for brands and models? I've started insanity and I just want to make sure I am not overdoing it.

I got the Polar F6 because it was recommended so much on MFP. I can do my water workouts with it and it is a light PINK! People now seem to like the Polar F7 - or their new on I think the FT7. Anyway - Polar is a respected brand. You will be surprised at how overstated the MFP calories burned are!

I dont have a heart rate monitor, but an easy way of testing if you are over doing it is, the talk test. If you can have a normal conversation with someone while you are exercising than you are not over doing it.
  • I'm using the Polar FT4 (got it at Target). The chest strap is adjustable and you can change the batteries without sending it out (some of the ones I researched had that as an issue).

I really like using the HRM as a way of determining how many calories I'm burning over all since MFP burned calories are totally off from what the HRM says. If anything, it's a motivational piece to make sure I hit my target burned calories of at least 500 per day so I have at least a 1lb per week weight loss.

    Good luck!

I use the Suunto comfort strap for my Concept2 rowing...it's soft, and weighs nothing. It feeds the HR data into any of the Suunto monitors. For a watch-type (for different types of exercise or daily wear), I think the Suunto t6c looks the best.

I agree with Clover...the calories are WAY overstated in the MFP exercise database (you get much more accurate calorie count considering HR data and weight).

I'm just about to start using hubby's Garmin Forerunner 301 - I have no idea how to convert the details to show calories burned!

I have the polar F7 and it is just ok...I would suggest the FT7 or higher.
  • I always use mine. I have a polar FT7 and find it very helpful with counting calories.
  • Anyone try the Polar RS100?

Polar is the way to go. Many ranges in HR monitors in what they do and price. I have a FT7 I think it is in the middle range of them. I love it and I am upgrading soon. I like it because it helps keep track of calories burned and HR so I can see if I need to push harder to burn more
