Starting weight training with a heart condition.

Long boring story but I have a heart condition that needs corrective heart surgery, I have been to see my cardiologist today. He had originally told me he couldn't operate until I had lost a large amount of weight. 9 months later I have now lost 129lb. Today he told me I could lift weights but nothing strenuous, ie if I have to strain to lift then it is to heavy. I wasn't planning on becoming a muscle man but after losing so much weight I am still soft and my muscle are not toned. I want to use the machines in the gym but have no idea really which ones I should use. I would like to strengthen up my lower back as it still hurts after standing for about 15 minutes. My arms and legs and abdomen also need toning. There are loads of websites that have training routines, I was hoping perhaps as many of you guys are a lot more knowledgeable than I, somebody could point me to an appropriate routine. I think I will have a spotter with me all of the time to check my form or I will ask one of the people there. I get a little sceptical when people try and show me their routine cos most of the time they are well advanced compared to me so I would rather find the correct routine for my situation if there is one :-)

  • My recommendation would be to ask your cardiologist if he has any trainers he feels comfortable referring to you, or working with a cardiac outpatient specialist. Don't want to mess around with heart conditions.
