I've been trying to eat healthy, exercise and lose weight now for a few months, but only now decided to open up and say hello to everyone! Hello!
My wife and I have been working toward a goal of running our first 1/2 marathon here in DC in March. I started in late October and found out quickly that it was going to be a long and hard road to get back into shape. My first run was for 15 minutes and I only survived because my training program allowed me to alternate walking and running throughout the entirety of the run.
I stuck to the plan as best as I could, running outside in the fresh air when Mother Nature allowed it and inside on a treadmill when she didn't. It is amazing how far one can come when you apply yourself. This past Sunday, I ran for 8 miles, stopping only twice while waiting at a road crossing. I am registered for a 10 mile race this Saturday, and instead of fear and dread, I'm only worried that the race may be cancelled due to bad weather!
I am a bit of a technology geek as well, having coupled myfittnesspal with mapmyfitness to share data about my exercises, with a Jawbone UP bracelet to measure my step count and sleep hours per day, with a heart rate monitor to ensure my heart doesn’t beat faster than it should for a guy of my advancing age and a wireless scale to transmit my weight data to the applications. I think all of these apps and devices help to keep me on track, motivate me, keep my cross training exercises and runs safe and effective and, to some degree, make it “fun”.
Anyway, I don't want to make this introduction too long. I just wanted to say hello and wish you all well in your healthy living journey. Feel free to say hello and maybe one day our paths will cross on the running trails (if it would stop snowing, that is)! Chow!
