what's up with this controversial topic of intermittent fasting? Just wondering what everyone's thoughts was on the subject?

I'm not sure how scientifically supported it is, but I tried it myself for a month once and, while I did lose fat, I was inclined to put it down to the fact that I had such a hard time eating all my calories in that small time alotted, that I rarely went a single calorie over the target level.
I also found it really uncomfortable on my schedule, because it usually meant working out about an hour after eating.0 -
You should pick up the book 5:2 The Fast Diet. It's very enlightening about how intermittent fasting is good for our bodies. My sister and I have been on the 5:2 for about 2 months now. Both of us are loving not just the wieght loss benefits, but the cleansing feeling. I suggest you read up on it.0

Its controversial because it goes against the Bro Science that says you NEED to eat Breakfast in the morning to get you energy for the day. It is great tool for fat lose especially if you are able to train fasted. I have been doing it for about 6 months now. I follow the 16:8 IF model. I break my fast at noon and don't eat after 8 p.m. So i just skip breakfast.0

i think it is a very silly modern term for what we used to call "skipping meals". sure you eat less if you skip a meal. calories in calories out bla bla bla. its really not that deep.0

I really just wanted to know why the topic is so controversial and why people view it as bad? Its not like you don't eat, its just a period of time of your choosing where you don't eat. Apparently its accelerates fat loss and is good for you.

It has a lot of science behind it. Well the leangains and eat stop eat methods do. There are a lot of trendy versions coming out that aren't as well founded.0

Love it. I do I.F. daily on a 16/8 plan. Takes some getting used to, but once your body adapts the fat pretty much melts away as long as you are eating right and exercising.

This is misinformed at best, ignorant at worst. It has ZERO to do with "skipping meals"...I consume as many calories in a day as someone who eats traditional hours. The difference is I train in a fasted state, which curbs cravings, stabilizes insulin levels, increases growth hormone, and mobilizes fat stores.

I realized I was doing it without even knowing it's a thing. I don't do it all the time but it's just a way of scheduling your calorie intake. I personally find zig zagging my calories throughout the week far more advantageous, but that's just my body and how I react to food.0

I train "fasting" though not on purpose (I go at 5 am and just can't eat that early) a couple days per week. But what I do find is that if I work out super hard on empty, I end up with 'sour stomach' which sucks in the worst way, so I end up drinking some milk or something before I go usually. Also, there is no way I could wait to eat until noon every day (unless I slept til 11). I think it works for some, but not for others, just like anything else.0

Its just another way to achieve calorie deficit. Skipping dinner works for me really well.0

Actually you eat the same amount of calories but in a allotted period. Seems a lot of people are misinformed about the subject.0

For me, it did actually help drop my fat % a fair few points and I found I could exercise hard while doing it. I ate all my calories between 6 or 7pm and 2 or 3am and the results quite surprised me. I ate around 2500 calories as well. I wish people would research before spouting off about things they know nothing about, likening it to simply skipping meals. There is more to it than that.0

Intermittent fasting comprises more than one version:
a) 5:2 fasting, two days a week you eat under 500 cal (women)/ 600 cal (men) and the other 5 days you just eat "normally", making sure though that you stay under your TDEE. (google: 5:2 fast or Dr Michael Mosley
b) 4:3 fasting, same as above, but three days fasting and four days eating under your TDEE
c) ADF = alternate day fasting or "The Every Other Day Diet" = every second day fasting. This form of dieting has been extensively researched by Dr. Krista Varadi and there are lot's of clinical trials about this. The 5:2 diet is based on her research. The major difference here is that you can not only eat what you like but also how much you like on your non fast days
All of the above are often combined with something called 16:8, 20:4 or 22:2, which means you eat all of your daily calories either within 8 hours, 4 hours or 2 hours and the rest of the day you eat nothing. Sometimes people just follow the eating window of 16:8... without restricting their calorie intake, something that does not work for me.
Now the concept of fasting is not new and part of quite a few religions. It also makes sense if one looks at the history of human kind. When we were still hunters and gatherers we did not eat 5 times a day, but long periods of no food were followed by times of feeding. The understanding is that while you are fasting your body does not need to concentrate on digesting food but can concentrate on repairing itself.
I have done a combination of the above over the last 12 weeks and I have lost 8 kg. This might not sound much, but I did not have to lose much to begin with. For me it works very well and I really enjoy my two days of fasting every week.
Anyhow, at the end of the day it is another way of calorie restriction and it might work for you or not.
I love it and for maintenance I will just do one day a week

I did the calculator on http://www.1percentedge.com/ifcalc/ and I didnt see anything about fasting....
I was under the impression I just eat 1536 calories on rest days and 1975 on workout days. Along with trying to keep my macros in order.

I love IF but what is funny is I do this naturally. I do not like breakfast it makes me feel sick. But people are always like you have to eat breakfast blah blah blah... I love 16:8 and it is so easy to do (for me) I have only lost weight one other time in my life and I went from 228 pounds down to 145 doing IF without even knowing it. I love that now people are seeing that we don't have to eat 5 or 6 small meals a day for me I cannot eat small meals once I start I go back for more so to limit myself and eat my calories in a certain amount of time and in two meals works so good. I hope you like doing it. Add me as a friend if you want another IF person on your team!!!0
