Mildly depressed...making it hard to work out efficiently

I have been super stressed out this week due to my dad falling ill recently. He has been suffering with heart disease and while he has been doing great the past 2 years, it has started to 'act up' again and he is (again) in and out of the hospital.
As an only child, I care deeply about my parents and hate to see either of them in pain or ill. It stresses me out and I feel tired, depressed, irritable, and just overall blah. It really makes it hard for me to exercise, since being 'down' also leads to me being physically out of it. Any suggestions on how to clear my mind and stay on track despite this tough time?

Do what you can to get your workout on because that is a great mood lifter. Even if it just means getting fresh air and going for a walk. One thing that I have done when I am not in the mood to workout I put in an exercise dvd and eventually I will feel like a huge slacker and get up and get moving. I am sorry about your father but what help can you be to your parents if you don't take care of yourself first?
  • Oddly enough I would love to have an answer to this question as well.

Recently, I've found that staying active has helped me stay focused and not consider the darker thoughts. The hardest part is starting, it seems.

Prayers and best wishes go out to you and your parents.
  • Stick with it. I understand what you mean about feeling down and not wanting to exercise but even a brisk 20 minute walk will lift your mood. It gets the endorphins going which helps you to feel better.

Thank you for the kind words...my coworker is taking me out on a walk this afternoon to get some air...it will certainly feel good to get away from the office! Thankfully, I have been super busy today, it keeps my mind distracted.

Bacardigirl I know where you are coming from. I have been suffering with depression for the last 11 months. Although it is hard to get motivated, once I start a workout I find it takes my mind off of everything that is going wrong around me and I finish the workout feeling a lot better about life and myself. During that time I am completely focused on me and my workout and it is a good way of relieving stress and worry.

    Hope this helps x
