Crisps/Chips Causing Stomach Pains

I used to be a frequent crisp/chip eater, these days not so much, probably once or twice a month or something similar. When I do eat them, I get bad stabby pains in my tummy. I'm not overly concerned about this as it doesn't happen with any other food stuff, but I'm wondering if anyone can shed some light on why it might happen? It's something my partner always complained of and now I'm getting them too after consuming them a similar amount, I can't help but wonder what the reason is!

It could be a number of things
Sometimes its that you are having a mild reaction to one of the ingredients in it, often things like corn/maize if they are corn chips, or some of the spicy flavourings, it can be the high salt in the chips, the type of oil/fat used on them, if they have a high fat content it can slow gastric emptying which can sometimes give you cramps if your body isnt used to it, or they may be causing your body to produce a bit of gas
Personally, i cannot have either type as i am allergic to corn/maize, and also have a digestive enzyme deficiency that makes me unable to eat potato based ones. Luckily, i have never liked them so its wasnt a loss
Does it happen with all types of chips? Flavours, corn/potato etc?
Maybe its really a good thing as it will deter you form eating them :P0 -
Thank you for your detailed response, really interesting.
I generally eat ones like Lime & Coriander Poppadum, or Sweet Thai Chilli, so maybe it is the spices/oils! And yeah it's probably a good thing really, stops me wanting them much! Not worth the pain It's no massive loss, I just found it very strange to suddenly have an "intolerance" to them since cutting back.0 -
They're probably irritating your digestive system. I have this problem if I eat too much red meat. I limit my red meat portions, or, I'll be sorry. It was so bad once that I woke up in the middle of the night wanting to toss my cookies. Thank God for Gravol!0

Sounds like the old adage:
Patient: "Doc, it hurts when I go like this"
Doc: "Don't 'go like this'"

That sounds like the most plausible explanation. But you're right that it's probably a good thing you can't eat chips frequently.0
