My First 5 KM - A Non Scale Success

Success comes in many forms not just by a number on the scale.
I've run two half marathons and one 10km race. Yesterday I ran my very first 5 km, the Army Run the proudest race I have run.
I have been recovering from a running injury and yesterday I was able to run the race doing 5 minute run intervals and 1 minute walk intervals.
I crossed the finish line in 37 min and 42 seconds, 2 seconds behind my 12 year old daughter. This was her first race!
I took up running a year ago in June. My daughter would often bike along side me on my long runs. I have tried to promote an active lifestyle and healthy eating but I have never infringed them on her. I quietly try to lead by example.
When I decided I was going to do the 5 km race I asked my daughter if she wanted to do it with me. I must say I was surprised when she said she did. She was at my half marathons cheering me on. Yesterday we ran the race together and my sister and her girlfriend also participated. My boyfriend ran the 1/2 marathon. The look of pride and the smile on my daughters face as she crossed the finish line and turned to look for me was every parent's dream. A very proud mama moment for me indeed!
My daughter is not overweight but she is not as thin as other girls her age and this bothers her. I always tell her she is growing into her body. I try to encourage but not force her to try new things and to participate in activities.
Just like many other people on here, one of my goals is to set a good example and be a good role model for my daughter. Yesterday I saw my goal met in the pride my daughter had in herself for first competing in the run and mostly for crossing the finish line.
My success was having my family participate together in a run that benefits injured soldiers and their families.
I've proudly posted a photo in my album of me and my family.

So proud of you. I'm nowhere near the running place myself yet, but my walking buddy and I are signed up for a 3k walk this weekend at the school where we work. Actually 3k is about what we've been walking--maybe even a little less, but since I've never been in anything organized like this before, it's a good starting place. Hopefully someday I will be doing a 5k run, or maybe even longer. Congratulations, and thanks for inspiring the rest of us.0
