I just started this again after gaining alot back from gettng off track. I went from 250 to 189 and now i am back up to 226. I am 5 5 and 26 years old. I work full time and have 3 kids. Is working out for 30 min a day 5 x a week enough? I was thinking about doing the biggest loser dvd with 5 lb weights in the am and then running or walking on treadmill for 30 min after work. Do u think i will see results if i Just do 30 min. i find it hard something to fit in an hour. I am on the 1200 cal diet. Thanks

The purpose of training is to improve your cardiovascular health and endurance, and if you're doing resistance training, then retain lean mass and optimise fat loss. It's not principally for weight loss, although calories that you burn in training give you more options as far as what to eat is concerned.
What you're suggesting is perfectly adequate for some improvement, ways to measure that would be to track your resting heart rate and/ or blood pressure.0 -
I only exercise 30 min per day and I've lost 20 lbs. The thing is, losing weight is more about your diet than anything else. The exercise is good for fitness and retaining lean body mass, but you've got to have the calorie deficit in order to lose. Your 1200 a day calorie goal sounds extremely low for someone who works, has three kids, and is planning on exercising as well. You're probably going to want to increase that.

you want to lose weight eat at a deficet no exercise necessary.
you want to lose fat and little muscle eat at a deficet and lift heavy weights
you want to lose weight and have a healthy heart/lungs eat at a deficet and do cardio
you choose.
Doesn't matter if you have kids, a job, a house etc most of us do...0 -

Or do a combination of both, as it's not binary. fwiw I've reduced bodyfat by about 30% with absolutely no "lifting heavy weights". I do two bodyweight sessions per week but the rest of the time I run, currently approaching 30 miles per week. takes a bit more than 30 minutes though.
Key point is, exercise helps and a combination of CV and resistance training is very complementary.0
