knowing where to start with weights

I have absolutely no idea where to start when it comes to weight training, I have always kept away from weights as like many people just assume they were for men or women who want to bulk up. But after reading so much on here about the wonders of weights I want to start using weights to help me loose weight and tone up. Im still very much over weight so will need to start at the very beginning but actually have no idea where the very beginning is. Can anybody recommend any websites that will have a suitable programme I can follow? I really want to work on my core too! Thank you

My rule of thumb is: Can you pick it up easily ? If yes, put it down and grab the next highest. If no, USE IT0

I'm interested in the replies to this question too. I live a fair way from my nearest town and gym so am looking for a strength training dvd suitable for beginner/intermediate. Any ideas?0

I started with the book new rules of lifting for women, was a great place to start. There is also stronglifts 5x5 which is a website0

For the most bang for your buck, you'd be looking at heavy lifting with barbells (or dumbbells if you don't have access to barbells).
I highly suggest reading Starting Strength, Stronglifts, AllPros and NROL. Pick one of the routines and stick with it for a few months.
Other forms of strength/resistance training you could also look into are TRX Supsension and Sandbags.
If you don't have access to equipment, look into bodyweight routines from Convict Conditioning, NerdFitness, or/and You Are Your Own Gym.

Even with books, videos, and other resources sometimes you will need a live person to check your form and offer pointers. A personal trainer with experience in lifting movements is a very good idea. Or if your gym is friendly enough, you may be able to just ask someone to help check your form.0
