good fat/bad fat

How are you able to eat things like olive oil and nuts when they have sooooo much fat in them? I understand that it is good fat, but if I'm only eating 20 grams of fat a day and a handful of peanuts have 15 grams of fat then how does that work? Only have 5 more grams of fat the entire day? Something is definitely wrong with that. Can someone please explain it to me?

I go over the default setting for fat every day and lose weight without trouble. Check out this article:

"The foundation for the "fat is bad" mantra comes from the following logic: Since saturated fat is known to increase blood levels of "bad" LDL cholesterol, and people with high LDL cholesterol are more likely to develop heart disease, saturated fat must increase heart disease risk. If A equals B and B equals C, then A must equal C.

"Well, no. With this extrapolation, scientists and policymakers made a grave miscalculation: They assumed that all LDL cholesterol is the same and that all of it is bad. A spate of recent research is now overturning this fallacy and raising major questions about the wisdom of avoiding fat, especially considering that the food Americans have been replacing fat with—processed carbohydrates—could be far worse for heart health. I think another reason fat has such a bad reputation is because it is calorically dense. So, without too much thinking, if you just reduce fat consumption, you're automatically reducing your caloric intake.

in my diary, if I go over on fat, as long as it is "good" fat, I don't worry.

Same goes for sugar. Eating craisins in my breakfast cottage cheese and a piece of fruit puts me over, but fructose is not as evil for my body as processed, refined sugar.

20g fat a day is not enough IMO.

I have mine set at 65g and reguarly hit 90 odd and that is with 2300cals/day. As long as it's from good sources, I don't care :)
  • Thanks everyone, that makes more sense now.
I figure since I'm very short I need a lot less fat/calories than everyone else. And if I don't keep myself on something strict, I will end up completely failing at trying to stay healthy. I don't feel deprived or anything either.
