Feet falling Asleep/Leg Cramps

I am nearly 6 feet tall and weigh 275. I just started walking after not having exercised in several months. I go with my dog because he keeps me at a good pace. Lately, about 5 min. into my walk, my right leg cramps up and it's very painful. Then my feet start to fall asleep as I'm walking. It becomes very difficult to keep up the pace when I'm tripping over feet that have fallen asleep. My shoelaces are not tight (I can move my feet in my shoes). I recently had a check-up and all was fine. Ideas? Suggestions? I want to walk longer, but the discomfort is too much right now.

Which part of your leg cramps up? Calf? Back of your thigh? Somewhere else?

    Do you take any medication?

Make sure you are stretching. Also, is it on the same side your dog is walking? When I run with my dog my right leg hurts because she runs so close to me that I have to adjust my running form so I don't trip over. But that's not really good because then I end up putting more strain in myself.
