ugh.. no success today.

I woke up to a young girl looking in my living room window. She was from across the street. Her dad had kicked her out and she slept outside in 20 degree weather. We called her mother. She wouldn't let her come to her because the mom's boyfriend doesn't like the girl. She called her grandma and the grandma wouldn't let her come there either. So called the Sheriff. He came and made the guy let her in so she could gather her things and go to a shelter. Oh, all this stressed me out. And how do we deal with stress? I ATE. My diet today was- a breakfast burrito, 2 chocolate chip cookies, a Hershey bar, a bag of cheese balls, a granola bar, a bowl of strawberry ice cream, a huge bowl of sweetened popcorn, and 2 corn dogs dipped in mayo . ok, my stress is better. Will get back on the track tomorrow.....

You know what, maybe you had no success with your diet today, but you reached out and helped someone who really needed your help. It may have been a stressful day, but you were a good human being today and that has to count for something.0

Wow that poor girl, what a terrible family she comes from. How could the grandmother not even be there for her. I just don't understand it at all.. Thank you for doing all you could for her and don't be so hard on yourself. One day will do nothing to your long term success. :flowerforyou:0

You absolutely have NOTHING to get down about...you made a human choice to get involved, to be proactive, to reach out and help someone. You have EVERYTHING to be proud of today... you made a difference. My dad says.. to the world you may be one person... but to this one person, you may have been the whole world.
Your scale may be a little heavier the next time you get on it, not from excess of food... but because your heart grew a million sizes today and that has to weigh something.
Tomorrow is another day.. a fresh start.. a new beginning. You will get back on track. Deep breath... give yourself a little pat on the back for being a good human being (we don't have enough of you) and take on whatever tomorrow brings.

I am going in a different direction here.
What you did for the girl was great, and you went at it wisely. Very nicely done.
However, I think you are using that stress as an excuse to overeat. The good part is that you recognized it. The bad part is you did it anyway.
Drop the excuses. I am going on vacation next week, and said to my wife last night that if I wasn't on this plan, my food vacation would have started already. "It's ok to have ice cream all week. Next week is vacation. I'll get back on track after that."
It's excuses like that which put me in the position I am in now. I suspect it's the same for you. Quit giving yourself excuses for doing things you know you shouldn't be. I know it's never that easy, but you've taken the first step in recognizing it.
That being said, as someone pointed out, don't stress yourself over the misstep. It happens. Just learn from it and try to stop it next time.0 -

1: I think what you did for this girl was absolutely wonderful. Good on you for helping her out. You reached out and didn't stop until you knew she was safe. Great job!
2: What the what? Once she was safe and you knew you had done what you needed to, why did you eat all of that? What was the stressor? Problem was solved, girl was safe. And if you were stressed out after fact (not sure why) and you felt you had to eat, why would your choices be all of that? It sounds as though you were either rewarding yourself or giving yourself an excuse to binge eat. Reach out next time, as the girl did reaching out to you, for help, before you start the bingeing.0 -

Why would you even have all those unhealty foods in your house? Don't make excuses. But please forgive yourself and get back on track. Also, get rid of all those foods, no one needs to be eating that stuff.0

Regarding the kid, I totally understand that even the 'success' of the police getting her to safety would stress you out; it's still a bloody awful situation and you have a heart. I haven't had a girl looking in my window, but had a boy knock on the door after his Dad barely made it across town to the boy's Grandma's house (across from mine). To get away from his Dad, he came over here. His Grandma now has custody while his Dad gets help. He's safe now, but I still worry, same as you.
Also like you, I have days like yesterday where the stress/food combination wins, but it won't always if you keep working at it and find new ways to cope with the stress. Today's a new day, for me and for you.

^^^ This 100%. One bad day shouldn't do anything more than convince you to do better the next day. We all get reminders about how much life can suck, and many of us use food to cope with those reminders. Is it the right thing to do? Maybe not, but you owned it and are moving on.0 -

My mom died two days after Valentines Day. I want to eat everything in sight and then some to comfort myself. Not going to do it because I know I will only feel worse. Just get through it one day at a time. Food is not the answer.0

I am sorry your wonderful supportive actions left you with such negativity that you had to turn it in on yourself.
There is hope for this young girl, she may now be able to have the life she and any other young person deserves. There are too many of us older people who did not live up to our responsibilities when it mattered. Too many children are left floundering by our selfishness.0 -
Scratch today's eating, and start over again ASAP. You handled what was a very stressful situation. Could it have ended better for you? Yes. Will you try harder next time? I think so. You realize why it happened, now work on resolving the issue. You were stressed I am sure, but what you did was a wonderful thing. Reward yourself by treating yourself with more respect, you deserve it!0

I love everybodys response and love how they go from one end to the other. Thank you to all who praise. I haven't heard or seen anything more from the girl, so hopefully she is still safe. To the naysayers- I haven't poisoned myself. I am still alive. And I haven't fallen into a deep dark pit of despair eating myself into oblivion. I am right back on track. I don't feel bad about it at all. I stay on track most of the time and my overall weight loss is about 60 lbs. One poster wrote "cookies taste better than exercise feels". On some days, I agree with that. If I want to eat junk all day, I do. And I don't feel guilty about it either. Then get right back on the straight and narrow.0

The good you did today certainly outweighs what you feel was the bad, caused by stress. I think the first is much more important so get back on track tomorrow knowing you made a real difference in someone's life.0

That's really sad, but... how does this have anything to do with you, OR how you eat for the day? She's not your kid, you did your part, and there's nothing more to be done about it.
If you use every little bump in the road, or every little thing that makes you upset as an excuse to give up and let it ruin your plans...you're going to have a very hard time having success. In your fitness goals, or otherwise.0 -
I wonder why we think food is the answer. Main thing is getting back on track which I am sure you are. We feel anxious and sad and treat ourself the way those people treated the little girl. Self destructive stuff. Maybe next time dont have the stuff in the house and try to calm yourself other ways like go exercise or something. I am trying to figure it out myself. I think food is the answer to everything. Food is not the answer, maybe talking to a friend, maybe others can come up with some things to calm us.0

I just now noticed that you have lost 60+ lbs already and are only 11 lbs from goal!! That is awesome and I have no doubt you will make it!!!0

You dont know anything about this girl. She could have been a drug addict who refuses to get help and the family perhaps stood their ground? Which in that case, I say good for the family!0 -
