I have three suggestions...

1. During the MFP joining process, make reading http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/1080242-a-guide-to-get-you-started-on-your-path-to-sexypants, MANDATORY.
2. If a member tries to post a thread with "1200 calories" somewhere in the title the OP should immediately be redirected to the Sexy Pants post.
# 2 becomes moot because of #3...
3. Petition the MFP powers-that-be to reconsider/re-code/re-something the pre-fill 1200 calorie goal. A low-calorie diet can be an effective way to lose weight…whatever! That is a DIET not a lifestyle change. This pre-fill enables Yo Yo Diet Lifers whose metabolism is shot because they've lost muscle along with fat.

....there are some quite tiny women out there who that is a reasonable calorie goal for.....0

True, but a simple formula would work that first suggests or confirms a target weight is healthy range (since so many have never been there or it's been so long), and then based on how much to lose, only offers weight loss options that are realistic or safer for long term success.
So your tiny woman with 10 lbs to lose would only see the 1/2 lb weekly loss goal.
Your big woman with 80 to lose would see all the way up to 2 lb weekly goal.
It would be nice to offer the option of a 10 to 20% deficit too, but I'm sure "survey says" it would never be taken if you can look at block calories and what people think are assured loss amounts weekly.
Better descriptions of activity levels would be good too, and not putting in the profile setup diet goals and fitness goals that makes it appear one effects the other - when no math crosses that line until actually done.
The problem there is, people are generally impatient, and if they don't see as fast a results as they want - they are out of here.
There's goes advertising dollars.
Because if you lose fast at first no matter what it is, are encouraged, and then it slows down or gets stuck, you are still here, you are still active subscriber, your are more ad revenue.0 -
