I'll be watching for follow-ups to this because IMO the study had some strengths and it will be interesting to see if anyone can replicate, or follow on. Someone earlier mentioned that they didn't control for confounders; they actually did in their model. They adjusted for age, sex, race/ethnicity, education, waist circumference, smoking, chronic conditions (diabetes, cancer, myocardial infarction), trying to lose weight in the last year, diet changed in the last year, reported intake representative of typical diet, total calories, and %from carbs, fat, protein.

The journal has a high impact factor so I would expect that they have some pretty rigorous reviewers.

It's easy to write it off as bs but I'm keeping an open mind about it (and possibly looking for some plant based protein powder considering that I'm in the risky age bracket).

You want some plant-based alternatives? It's your lucky day, the guy who wrote the study founded a company that sells some...

Very nice summing up by the NHS here:

    http://www.nhs.uk/news/2014/03March/Pages/high-protein-diet-may-be-harmful-for-middle-aged.aspx

    Extract:
The warning was raised in a press release about a large study which found that for people aged 50-65, eating a lot of protein was associated with an increased risk of dying.

However, the study, which assessed the diets of Americans in a single 24-hour period (rather than long-term), found in those aged over 65 that a high protein diet was actually associated with a reduced risk of death from any cause or from cancer. These differing findings meant that overall there was no increase in risk of death, or from dying of cancer with a high protein diet.

And, in those aged over 65, a high protein diet was actually associated with a reduced risk of death from any cause or from cancer.
