Degenerative cervical disk

I have been seeing my chiro a few weeks for a C-6 disk problem. My symptoms are pain in my shoulder down my arm and into my thumb, and a lot of tingling and numbness. It comes and goes, but since I started treatment with cervical traction, it seems to have gotten worse. I do not know if my exercising with lifting is also causing some of the problems too. I just started on my fitness plan a little over a month ago, and I feel so much better...I am sooo discouraged because I want to begin lifting heavier, but I am afraid that it will further damage my neck. Does anyone have any experience with this problem? My chiro told me just to not do upper body workouts for awhile, I have had trouble following that advice, although I don't do any obvious neck stressing lifts. It would seem to me that I should be able to do some, in fact, it seems to me that strengthening would be good for me as long as I use proper form, and possibly some modifications. Any advice would be helpful to me. I am just getting into all this and so motivated now, I hate to have to give it up...I feel like this would destroy me right now...
