Strength training noob: ideas?

After a couple of years of happily getting my cardio from road running, I now need to do some swim training (long story, involving lifeguard training). The swim membership at my local pool includes the gym, so I thought it might be an idea to make the most of it and do a bit of strength training, but I don't have a clue where to start. I don't want to bulk up. Can you help? (with no technobabble, please: talk to me as if I'm the village idiot because, y'know...)

    Go to Amazon, purchase New Rules of Lifting for Women, Read it, Understand it and Start the program. You will be glad you did! :)
