Can I ask a question?

OK, I'll probably get slammed for just asking... but why are some topics locked after a while? I can't tell they are locked until I try to go in and post a reply, and suddenly I get a message the topic is locked.... What's up with that? Is it a private conversation? If so, why can I still see it? It's kind of frustrating... is there a problem with topics continuing forever or something?
I could use some explanations. Please be kind, I'm not trying to open any cans of worms, I just don't get it.
:embarassed:

I think they lock topics if they get too heated or if things are said that maybe shouldn't be, etc. I think it's just to lock it down to stop the debate from continuing on.

It gets locked when a certain # of people have replied on it, then it is full....usually it will continue on another thread.

I believe a topic gets locked after a topic reaches a 500 post threshold.

both answers are correct. when it reaches 500 posts, or the 20th page, the thread has reached its capacity, and will be continued on a new one, which you can find a link to on the very last post of the thread.

if a thread becomes too dramatic or heated, Mike or Al can also lock it to shut down the conversation. this happens less often, thankfully :)
