I knew it was going to happen. This is the first time I've gained since June 9th. It's a horrible feeling! This weekend was a little mini vacation for my family so I didn't get to exercise and I didn't eat as well but I still stayed within my calories.

What do you do when you've gained weight for the week?

Any tips to keep me going?

I know that feeling. Don't beat yourself up over it. Just tell yourself it was a learning experience and get the exercise going again. Also push all the water you can. Next week will be better. Good luck. Kaye
  • You've already lost 35 lbs - that's fantastic! Don't let a "hiccup" along the way derail you completely - you've done so well for yourself already. Don't despair or be angry at yourself; everyone trips now and again. Just pick yourself up and resume your workout schedule, and the bit you've gained back will be gone again. And of course you have your support group here, and we're all cheering you on ;)

If you stayed within your calories, exercise or not, you'd maintain or lose depending on your goal set with MFP. The weight gain you noticed is most likely excess sodium from the not-so-good foods you ate which caused your body to retain water. The water that your body holds onto definitely adds up weight wise, especially if you don't drink enough water to flush the excess sodium out of your system. So you can sleep well knowing that you didn't actually gain weight as in fat, but only weight as in water and when you drink enough water it'll go away as quickly as it came and you'll get back to your real weight!

I know how you feel - but it is really a small thing in the whole scope of things. This journey you are on is about choosing, making decisions, and taking care of yourself. So, you chose to indulge slightly, and you also chose to not exercise as much (I did the same thing over the weekend). So, when you get on the scale and it is up instead of down, you choose to increase your exercise after those kinds of days. I know that it will come back down and that I will balance out again. One thing to note, however, is what did you eat - because I think when you get on maintenance that will be important information to know to help prevent weight gain. Also, note how much exercise you didn't do - so, for example I did do shopping entailing a lot of walking while my daughter was here this weekend - but it was obviously not enough to keep me from gaining - so I have learned now that when I get to maintenance - I will have to do "more" walking or some other kind of cardio to maintain my weight along with eating healthy. It is a lesson learned and NOT a "failure."

    Blessings

Don't beat yourself up. :) If you stayed within your calorie allotment it's probably water retention from sodium. This happens when we eat out a lot. Like others have said, increase your water intake and that weight will disappear.

I'm really hard on myself, so this is my internal chant when I have a bad week...

Quit crying, your much healthier than you used to be, you can (fill in whatever physical thing I can do now) that you couldn't do six months ago. Your health problems are dissappearing. You are not defined by a number on a scale but the way you live your life and your life is pretty damn good.

Another one that I use is:

I will be here a year from now. I can quit and be here fat and lazy or I can keep at it and be here healthy and excitied and near my goal weight. Choose Now. (sometimes, I have to choose four or five times a DAY.)

I just keep repeating it everytime my brain goes into feel sorry land, like stuart smalley. Feel free to steal it or completely ignore it! :)

Oh wow...thanks, I never thought about this. I did have a lot of sodium based foods. It was mostly restaurants, fast food, and a hot dog from the stadium. I guess that makes sense. And I haven't had a lot of water since I've gotten back. Thanks for the advice :flowerforyou:

Maybe I have my head in the sand but..........I don't post a gain!!! I just get back on my horse and lose it and then post the next loss lol. Works for me. I am not a person that does well going to weight loss meetings and such, love this site. Maybe it is I don't like the feeling when the gain is written down, get discouraged.

You have done very well since you joined, forget the gain and keep going. You are doing amazing.

Thanks! Weight gain goes both ways for me. I either look at it as motivation to work it off again or discouragement because I'm not losing and it's hard work. It depends on my mood I guess.

You haven't gained since the 9th June. You have to give your self and body a little break and when you go back to the working out your body will thank you for the rest by losing more :o)

Well, first of all I struggle with whether or not to post it! I HATE showing a gain, but on the other hand, a gain from a weekend or even week-long vacation usually comes off fairly quickly (not sure why). So if I brave it and post the gain, then I have the joy of a big loss the next week. If I don't post it, I'll probably look like I stayed the same or lost .2 pounds. Actually, I think it is better to admit it, draw a line in the sand and look forward to a new day.
